I've seen the term bondo used many times during my aluminum boat searchings. Is it anything like gluvit or is it entirely different?

Bondo is a guy from New York...d:) the bondo your talking about is a polyester filler commonly used to fix dents in cars.. on a boat, it's ok above the waterline but never use it below.......

You mean Maine? Bond-o lives in old town maine.

As for my question, I've seen a few boats that have been coated on the inside w/ bondo. i thought it was similar to gluvit.
Now, my question is, why do they coat the inside of a jonboat w/ bondo.

Re: What is bondo?

You do not coat the inside of anything with bondo it is only used for spot repairs. If you are looking to coat the inside of a boat look for something else like paint.

Re: What is bondo?

I wouldn't even recommend it above the water line on a moored boat. Just this spring I had to grind out a patch on a fiberglass boat. A few years after the work was done, the paint all blistered at the bondo patch where it was thick (~1/16"). The thinner parts seemed OK though. I was some worried about it before I found out it was a patch under those blisters.

It looked like they had done a proper job. All primed and what not.

For anything even remotely thick I use epoxy thickened with microballons. There are nice marine vinylester fillers out there like 3m's:
Marine Filler

What is Bondo or Who is Bondo????Bondo is what is used to do bodywork on automobiles when you get dents and creases.Automotive bondo is not recommended for the marine environment because it is not impervious to moisture.Though,I have used a particular type of auto bondo on an aluminum boat with good results. The one that I used had aluminum filler in it.It was designed for certain exotic cars.To answer the other question of WHO is Bondo....He is a very decent and knowledgable guy that lends a ton of very valuable advice to we in need.Charlie

What I find odd is that he put it on the inside of an aluminum jonboat. Those are supposed to be old and leaky anyway.

Actually,.......
I was born,+ raised in Old Town Maine,.............20 years worth anyways........
I've lived in Extreme Northern New York since 1975,+ bought a place,... Actually 2 places on the mouth of Chaumont river last year.....
But,.... I'm still a Maineiac at heart........

And,......
As stated Above,...... Automotive Bondo,.. aka, Body Filler, Really has No Place on Any boat,.......
Especially on a Tin Boat........

Automotive Bondo is a Polyester based Putty,......That's Quite Porous.........
I too build my own fillers using Epoxy as a base resin.......

I know that. My lund doesn't leak a drop. I just think the old 1960's sears flatbottom jonboats don't have character till they are all dented up and leaky. As for my question I was just asking what the stuff is. Yall seemed to answered that fairly well. the guy must have been an idiot to COAT the inside w/ bondo.

And Bond-o, I stand corrected as to where you live.
