A thread to pile-on Ms. Sheehan draws rants and raves against a poor woman who mental state is definitely in question. Ever visit with people in MADD about drunk drivers, well there is a certain amount of fanaticism that follows the loss of a love one for no good reason.

Tell me what have you done for your country.

We volunteer a whole bunch of our time to the PTA and Little League Baseball, not to mention cash donations to a few select charities. You?

Donated a very large sum to AMVETS last week.
These guyes are owed a debt that can never be paid.
Plus adopted a soldier for Rush yesterday. Cool idea.
Also donate lots of money to local law enforcement, (sheriffs search and rescue) and (Highway Patrol). Habitat for Humanity get free closings from me.

I vote, and have coached Little league basketball for the last 25 years other than that I really don't know what else I can offer, other than what the IRS confiscates from my wife and I, which is more than I'm pleased about.

Spud

I'll be the first to admit, I haven't done a G-D thing.

My contribution to the world isn't charitable. I'm not a "helping hand" kind of guy, but rather I drive at the true root of the problem. My contribution will be my children, making sure they are brought up with manners, a solid moral compass, and respect for other people.

I buy from roadside lemonade stands.

I help old ladies in the snow.

I give a ride to that poor guy carrying a gas gan.

I throw my trash in a trash can, use my blinkers, put items back on the shelf if I don't buy them, and return my grocery cart to the designated areas. My contribution to society is to make sure I (nor my children) are not a BURDEN to society.

Re: What have you given lately

Hmmm. I served in the military. . . family tradition. I sent a Son and a Daughter to Desert Storm. A grandson is there now.

When I was young I served on School Boards, PTA, local government, an early organization that was a precursor of HFH, Local Human Relations Council, Local Library Board, Cub Scouts, Brownies, coached Pee Wee football...

I hold two mortgages on homes occupied by low income families. Maybe someday they can pay me, maybe not. If not, they get the mortgages when I die. Just after I retired I funded the Student Emergency Relief Fund at the last school where I worked.

Now, and for the last couple of years, I moderate iboats several hours a day, 7/365.

I used to give the Red Cross about half a gallon of blood a year, but now the medicine in there makes it unusable so I give them money. My other charity is the USO.

Pay taxes in unreasonable amounts. Executive on loan to the local United Way. Have participated in the Big Brother program, helped local coast guard aux, my father taught the advanced navigation course for 10yrs. until they tried to mandate sensitivity training for all volunteers (liberal crap). Participated in a local habit for humanity type program (discouraging), volunteer at the YMCA ref'in youth basketball games. Bought garbage bags from the police. Participated in the big bros, big sisters fishing tourney. Pay dues to protect everyones second ammendment rights even when I didn't own a gun. Wife is a teacher, underpaid and still contributes large sums of our money for supplies. I voted, I smoke, I drink. Volunteered to host a katrina victim family, but nobody wanted to come to Wisconsin. Gave money to the Luthern Church, Salvation army, local dog park, donated food for local pantry.

Adults don't need parental permission to join the military.

Paid a s*load of taxes last year. A large majority of that money went to welfare, medicare, gifts/loans to foreign countries, etc. How much is the tax on 105k after deductions for mortgage interest? It is TOO MUCH, that's how much. Want me to pay a little extra for all the Iraqi refugees that show up here as well?
Oh, as far as the "fanaticism that follows the loss of a love one for no good reason" goes- I've lost plenty of loved ones for no good reason and I'm not out in the world acting like a horses rear about it.

i just completed 7 1/2 years as an officer in the navy. a fact that i'm very proud of, even if i feel i got more out of it than i gave.

i treat every human being equally, regardless of race, religion, etc. i think that's giving a lot to this country, considering very few practice what they preach.

on januray 28th, i'm going to jump in 30 something degree water with a thousand other nuts, in support of the special olympics. the great chesapeake bay polar bear plunge. talk about skrinkage...

I like that wilkin. If a few more people thought/acted that way we'd need a lot fewer Ted Kennedys and Barbara Boxers. Not that we need any of them at all.

Re: What have you given lately

Contribute mainly through Church, I know there is no adm. overhead, other than that I help others as I can. Just installed a replacement outside door for a single lady a couple of blocks away. Make sure the snow is cleared for 4 elderly Lady's and one handicapped family.

As many have got to know I can repair almost anything and have a large number of tools, I get called all the time. If they are elderly I usually do it, if not I offer to help if I can; but, won't do it by myself if they are able.

Also, during this time of the year I never pass a Salvation Army bucket without being generous. No matter how many I see or how often: I make sure I contribute. I think they do a lot of good and don't toot their horn much. I also let store management know of my displeasure when they have been excluded or are prevented from ringing their bell.

I buy poppies and more poppies from the Vets and make sure its a generous amount.

Lastly: I appreciate those who served in the service! And, volunteer the time to (going to say worthy, but, that's subjective) causes.
