What have I got.

The transom says 1979 V4 Evin with T/T. There is no marking on the block. The motor has a small early type VRO mounted at the top of the Air Box. 1984 parts list/drawings show an early small VRO mounted at the top of the air box and a primer not a choke. The carbs are marked 1-5/16.
Does anyone have any idea. Am I correct in thinking it is a 1984 140.

Re: What have I got.

Hi boobie. Can't post very much as the power head is stripped ready to pull off in the morning. Looks like any regular bubble back. I dont know what parts would give any clues. Tell me and I will do pics.
Thanks for the response.

Re: What have I got.

Look for a core plug about the size of a quarter on the block. If you find it, post those #'s.

Thanks boobie but there are no usual markings on the core plug.

Is the plug just blank ?? Is there a model # on one of the stern brackets ??

Re: What have I got.

The plug is blank and the transom mount shows 140 943R indicating Evin 1979. The power head is definitely not a 79 as they did not have the VRO or the primer/enrichener on the 140 79s. There is no facility to mount a standard type fuel pump on this motor only the check valve connection.

Re: What have I got.

Are you 100% sure that there is not a spot on the intake manifold to mount a simple pump ??????---The fitting from the engine to the VRO pump is NOT a check valve.

Re: What have I got.

Thanks for the response racerone. Closer inspection revealed the connection, covered in paint. I know that most of the earlier VRO models had the connection. Ok maybe it is not a check valve but it is a fancy connection for it not to be. This is the same connection found on all of the early VRO units. Judging by the VRO and primer set up it looks like an 84 model but what size. Does the carb size tell us?

Re: What have I got.

The purpose of that " connection " is to prevent a sudden surge of air pressure to enter the VRO air motor.----The result of that might be a shattered VRO pump.-----It was not designed for high pressure.-----The pulse limiter closes on high / sudden air flow to prevent the VRO from cracking !!----A 1984 and later crossflow block has a place to mount a 1983 fuel pump.--Mounts right there near the starter motor.

Re: What have I got.

Thanks for the correction racerone, I should have said pulse limiter.
So far I am no nearer to determining what year and size it is. I think that the carb bore sizes for a 140 are larger than the 115. Do you have a handle on the carb bore sizes?
