What exhaust manifold / adapter do I need?

Hi everyone, first post in the Mercury section. I searched but did not find anything.

I bought a 1979 V175 outboard, serial number 5XXXXXX. According to what I have seen in the parts books, it is the early version of the V6. The previous owner was complaining of low water pressure after replacing the powerhead and assured me it was likely a bad water pump tube. Well, after much head scratching, it would appear that a later model powerhead was bolted onto an older midsection, and the cooling passages do not line up at all with the ones on the engine's midsection, so most of the water is gushing out the exhaust instead of being pumped into the powerhead.

Looking at the parts lookups, at serial number 6618751, the design of the powerhead and mid adapters changed. For course, both parts are NLA, so I need to find these bits used or figure out a workaround.

The powerhead I have now has rectangular exhaust ports and is newer than the leg. Based on the photos of gaskets I have seen, it would appear that it,s much closer to a later-model V6 than the early setup I had. Is it possible to find a midsection from a later-model V6 and use the adapters, but keep the old-style leg, and the new style powerhead? I have the part numbers for the factory adapters, but they are NLA and finding these parts would likely be difficult. I am hoping that the port design and passages of a later model leg will match up to what my powerhead has (I believe it to be a 1980 V175), and allow me to keep the midsection I have now. I would appreciate any insight you guys can give me. I am a new Mercury guy, and I really like this motor, despite the problems and head-scratching. It is definitely a nice piece of engineering.
