What engine do I have?

Just acquired an engine yesterday. May not be keeping it, but I'd like to know what it actually is.

It has an Evinrude cowling, but the bracket plate apparently doesn't agree. :sneaky:

From what I've been able to find from the Model number thus far, the engine is actually an 85HP 1978 Johnson with manual tilt and 20" shaft. And I don't know what that last character is in the model number; 6 or C or G? And what would that denote?

The serial number starts with "J" but I can't find anything about the actual numbers.

Any help? Thanks!

It is a 1978 model 85 HP.----And I believe it is the " JAVELIN " styling on the cowling.---Obviously the cowling was sold or went missing.

Type in Evinrude model number identification code and see what pops up on the Internet.

More fun that way!
