What does this outdrive fit?

I bought an upper unit thinking it was what I needed. It has a tag on it that reads..."LARGE SPLINE, GEARED FOR 120/140". I tried to put the lower unit on and it definitely does not match my 1976 140 Lower Unit. Finally I got a good look and sure enough ... there is a serious difference... Does anyone have any idea what this upper unit will hook up to? Or what it may have been built for?

You better take some pictures Randy, OMC and Mercruiser used the 120's and 140's and thru several different types of drives over the years.
Who knows if the one putting the tag on what you bought had a clue to what it was.

Re: What does this outdrive fit?

Thanks for the quick replies. I can only tell you (at this time) that the splines are more coarse (thicker splines) than on my 140 (mercruiser with the old chevy II 4 cylinder engine...and it appears to have a smaller inside diameter but the outer diameter feels like the same or very close to the same size. It will not slip over the drive shaft and shows that it rubs a circle of smaller size on top of the drive shaft. I've fooled with lots of 260's, 470's, and 140's of the '76 thru '78 years but have never seen this difference on anything in a 140 mercruiser case. The serial number starts with something like 27...... my 140 had a serial number something like 334--------------

I don't remember the Years involved,.....

But I do remember that,... That is 1 of the suttle Changes in the old Mod.1s........

I Think the Course Spline is a Newer Version than the Fine Splines......

Sorry, but No,the old splines were coarse, and the newer ones are fine spline,

The reason may be more surface contact with the fine spline.
