What does carb baffle do?

Hi,

ive noticed that my twin carb outboard has a baffle in one carb and not the other.
What does it do, is it essential?

Are you talking about the plastic grid that sits infront of the choke plate? If so, then it is just to keep out large debris that might get sucked in. Not essential, but a safety item to keep out bad stuff.
