This is my first post. I have never owned a boat before and want to restore an older 1960s boat so I have been looking around for one. I'm getting a great deal on one located about 1.5 hours away and have been sent some close up pics. To me it looks like a great project and I know I won't really know till I get there but wanted to see what your guys opinion was on what might need to be done on this thing.

And does anyone know what type of boat this is???

Re: What do you think?

Welcome to iBoats!
That is a GREAT old Girl!!! Very similar to my 1961 Lonestar Flamingo. Exactly the Same 1962 40 HP Evinrude Lark motor that I have. Looks like a T-Nee or Gator Trailer. I paid $250 for mine and it had the seats and everything. Deck and Transom were PERFECT so I did NOT have to replace them. You should NOT pay over $500 for that rig IMHO. It would be a great first project and boat but quite a bit of work. The motor is a Selectric Shift which can be a problem if the Electric shift switch on the throttle assembly is bad or the mags in the lower unit are bad. Do you know when if the motor runs and when it was ran last??

The price is well below $500 so im happy about that. The guy said the boat was running every weekend last time it was used and running just fine. But it hasn't been started or used in 2 years. Of course I'm having to go by what he says but so far seems like a nice guy just wants to get this off his property now. I believe this has been kept outside so a little worried about the transom. I have read through your thread and saw you lucked out with a barnyard find, thats amazing! What do you think about the floor? I see a small crack through the middle, looks more like a surface issue.

If it's been outside for any period of time then you may have to replace the deck and the stringers and the transom which is a big job. If you are looking for a boat to go to the lake then this is probably not the one. If you want a project I'd say this is a GREAT ONE! Grab the motor and pull it up and down and see if the transom flexes. If it does then you will need to replace it. Get inside the boat and see if the deck is soft and spongy. If it is then it will have to come out. If you have to Restore it ALL you will spend approx. $1000.00 and about 200 hrs of time. If you have tools, great if not you'll spend $200 on tools to get the job done.

I definitely have time, started a new shift at work where I'll be off Sat, Sun and Mon. I have most basic tools so I think this will be a fun summer project. I'm hoping not to replace the transom and stringers but I am prepared for it.

The type of boat and year should be on the title....but as far as the repairs (if needed, hopefully it won't) it really doesn't matter as any repair question you have, can be answered here. All small boats are built in similar manners and all of the have been experienced here by someone. So just check her out good and post whatever comes up. Good Luck.

And Welcome to the Dry Dock.

Re: What do you think?

What a sweetheart! Looking at this I see a diamond in the rough! I would however, anticipate finding a few things, especially in the flooring and possibly stringer and transon (like Woodonglass suggested). Looking at pics 2 and 4 I see signs of water stains along the sides of the hull getting higher and higher :-O. I am guessing that for the last couple of years she was stored outside, bow down, and it appears that quite a bit of water had been pooling under the dash.. None-the-less, it would definately be a great project boat, and it sounds like the price is right (especially if the motor runs)!! Good luck and keep us posted!

Okay guys, thanks for the positive words. I should be checking this boat out this weekend and if happy I will be bringing her home. I will keep you updated.

Re: What do you think?

In your third picture I can see a data plate. So you should hopefully be able to find out what type of boat this is. Otherwise it could be tough as there were hundreds of companies making little fiberglass runabouts in the 50s/60s with some only producing a handful of boats. Also check out fiberglassics.com. That is a very cool little hull and would be well worth fixing up. I would pretty much assume a total gut job though.
