Re: what do you think of this maxum boat? can you tell me the model?

it was my first boat and i did like it and had alot of fun with it. It ended up being too small for my needs as i would bring more friends along than expected. but it may be perfect in your situation. Like i said check for rot. Pull the floor hatch up and feel around underneath and pull all the seat cushions up as the seat frames have a tendancy to rot(as they do in all older boats)..If possible take it for a test ride. These boats usually came with a force outboard but yours appears to have a Mercury which is a plus.

It is a Maxum 1700 XR - 1989. Maxum uses 4 digit numbers to represent the rounded about length and has a 2-3 letter to describe the type. i.e. SR = stern drive bowrider, SC=stern drive cuddy, XR=OB bowrider

Now that I look at it I think the following:

Type of Drive:
S=Stern drive
X=Outboard

Type of Hull:
C=Cuddy
R=Rider (Bowrider)
CR=Cruiser

Note: Also this info is based on my limited knowledge of Maxums combined with my reasoning skills. Both of which can be flawed, though it also happens to make sense.

That boat looks fairly decent considering it's age but it's definitely not been babied. As mentioned, your biggest concern is rot. Check very carefully because ANY soft spots in the deck are usually indicative of more serious rot below in the stringers. You also want a rock solid transom with no flex.

thanks ezmobee! Alaways as knowledgable! We did tale a look at the floor seems really good, one spot is a little softer but still solid, we lifted all seats and looked at the floor hatched and tried to pull at the woood, jumped in the boat and tried knocking everywhere! Everything seemed fine except for that one little spot. I think its in ok shape for this year! Thanks for your advice!

I think with yourself, Wife and 3 kids under 5 your going to out grow that boat very fast. something in the 18-20 foot range might be a lot better if your looking at keeping it for many years.

I just purchased the same and will start a new project thread in a few minutes:
Here is what i can tell you, because i have just completed some investigating and got some information from Brunswick yesterday.

IN short, It looks exactly like mine, which has a hull id number of
? HIN# USHD12MA1889
? 1989 Maxum
? 1700 XR MA
? Made in Pipestone, Minnesota
? Maximum persons or weight lbs????
? Max Engine capacity????

I will try to attach a marketing circular Brunswick forwarded to me yesterday.
View attachment 1989 maxium1700xr Brochure.pdf
Overall length is 17.9 ft
Beam 7'2"
It was "sold as a Full Value Package- Boat, engine and trailer"
The standard ob engine was an 85hp Force.

Now this is a sticking point for me at this juncture. My 1989 Maxum 1700 XRMA does not have a USCG Capacity Plate. If anyone has a plate on their 1989 Maxum XR MA, pls take a pic)

I have trolled the net, and only see 85hp as being the max hp for this boat. And now I see your boat has a Merc 115hp. So im scratching my head.

I am currently looking to repower my vessel (and preferrably with a Johnson 90) but if the USCG Capacity is 85hp, I would be overpowered, and my insurance company would not allow insurance on this.

So what ive done is contacted Brunswick. Sadly, they had just the circular, and no information on USCG capacity for the 1989 Maxum XR MA. I am also looking for an owners manual. (Again, if anyone has one, Im all game for a scanned copy of it!)

In conclusion, i purchased mine. Have cleaned it up, and have some minor cleanup and de-oxidation to tend to.

Check for my project pics. And if anyone out there finds any USCG Capacity guidelines for this particular 1989 Maxum 1700 XRMA i would be grateful if you posted that information. It is pretty important.

i'm pretty sure your hp rating is 85hp (from what i remembered seeing) keep in mind its a light hull and will run well with 85hp. but i see your issue about wanting to go over 5hp. Maybe your insurance company can verify max rating?

You new Maxum owners may want to take a look at the Maxum owners club - they have a few manuals posted or you could join and post specific questions in their forums. I bought a 25 Maxum cruiser last year and have used their site as another source of info.
