Re: What do I do?

Yeah, I am familiar with the sending unit, thats how the paper got in. It is in the middle of the tank, my pickup is in the back and I dont see anyway to get it out without taking some f/g out. Don't wanna do, you know. Thanks for the help. I think I am going to try a piece of leader wire and a treble hook. Chances are slim, but who knows. If that dont work I will research the pump.

You certainly have the right name.

If you that into it.You might do better with a piece of #12 soild copper wire with a weighted treble hook, more ridged to help get further back.If your lucky it sank strait down, use a coulpe pieces of wire from an old coat hanger and try your luck like chop sticks. If you have a enough spare fuel tanks to syphon the gas out, when empty you may have better luck.A buddy if mine just came over and showed me a neat lil snap -on tool. Its a lite with a scope mounted on the end, kinda like the Dt=.uses to go up and check out the plumbing. They can inspect the inside of cylinders.Just trying to come up with ideas.Be careful my friend.Gas is dangerous

Just a thought, not sure how big the hole is but what about a net like used in a aquariam. you could rig the handle longer and just drag the bottom

Go to a large paint store, buy a $10 paint mixer, the drill driven propellor type, jiffy mixer is one type.
Cut the outter ring off leaving the prop part exposed, twist the blades to create more pitch. maybe notch the L.E. of the blades to make it more likely to snag the paper.

chuck it in an airtool drill and run that down in the tank, it will draw the paper to it.

I wouldn't use an elec drill or it will go boom.

Re: What do I do?

Thanks guys for all of your ideas. Right now I have 125 gals of gas in it, so I am going to try to burn some of the fuel out as soon as I get a day off. Then I will be able to take the sending unit back out and give some of your ideas a try. I will let you guys know how it turns out. Thanks again.

How about using a electric fuel pump and suck from the sending unit hole and pump back into the filler ..add some type of filter on the inlet end.....have long enough clear hoses so you can watch if the paper gets sucked in....

Just a thought, with regard to your putting the piece of paper in a jar with gas and not getting the desired disenagration of the paper. You don't mention if you shoke the jar every so often to help the paper dissolve, remember when running your boat I'm sure there will be some bouncing involved thereby stirring up the contents in your gas tank, while going to and from your fishing spot.

Re: What do I do?

I have been shaking the jar a bit, but no signs of breaking up yet. It may still break up, it has only been 7 days. One thing about it, if it clogs while on the water, I can take the hose to my fuel/water separator off and blow back to the tank to dislodge any paper. Not what I wanna do, but I am confident I will make it in that way.

If you have an anti-siphon valve you won't be able to do any blowing into the tank.

Drain the tank completely and attach a long skinny tube to the hose of a shop vac. A long piece of PVC tubing is a good option for this trick.

Once the tank is drained, then stick the long tube into the tank and get the paper. The shop vac should create enough suction to grab the paper and allow you to pull it out.:D

No anti syphon valve. Good idea zephr, but I would be afraid the fumes from the gasoline will cause a fire with the shop vac.

If you blow dry the tank out with compressed air, you'll greatly minimize that risk. Put water in the shop vac, too.

Still somewhat risky, but sounds worth trying. It's just so hard working with a tank this big through a 2" hole, you know? I don't know if I get all the water out if I put it in.

A regular shop vac and gas fumes is asking for an explosion. A vapor safe vac is OK but a standard vac will cause an explosion, water or no.

The specialty equipment stores for commercial business equipment. I've seen one at a tank repair shop had but it was so long ago the guy not only closed the shop but is dead now.

Re: What do I do?

I have seen vaccums that run off of compressed air, rather than electricity. This would be zero risk for explosion. A shop I used to work in, had a couple of these. Sorry I didn't mention these before, but they'll work great for cleaning the tank out too.

Re: What do I do?

NO TO THE SHOP VAC.Tink about the sparks a drill, circular or other electrical device makes. That, and the gas fumes that will always be present+caplewie. No paper to worry about then.

Yeah, a air run vac would work safely.
