Re: What did my daughter catch?

Many old timers grew up gigging them and bringing them home for their mothers to pressure cook and can. They say carp croquettes are pretty good. I've never had one, but there may come a day when we have to expand our notion of what we think is edible. I'm pretty sure the prohibition on baiting a hole with corn is due largely to the inability of fish to digest it, but I'm not positive.

What's up lncoop?

I was always told the best way to cook carp is place them on a hickory board and put the board on an open grill for 10 minutes. When done...throw the carp away and eat the hickory board.

Just sayin'.

Those things are a blast to catch, I still go carp fishing even tho all of my friends mock me for it. I like to use a #4 or #6 circle hook with a 1/2oz egg sinker. I put a small split shot about 6" up from the hook to keep the egg sinker away from the hook. A couple pieces of corn on the hook and just let it sit on the bottom.

There are many thousands of anglers across the old world to whom carp fishing is a religion almost.I am happy to say I am one of them .There are many ignorant people who mock them, most of whom have never caught one or fished for them,Iwould tell them don't knock it till you try it,how many 20# plus fish a year do you catch?not many I bet. Two ways Carp are good, brined and smoked with maple syrup brushed over them. Or, cleaned , whole fish pressure cooked, cleaned of course. Take the fish, break it up or flake it, mix with chopped celery, onions , a little garlic, bread crumbs a splash of Mayo or Miracle Whip and a egg. Make a patty then role in bread crumbs/cracker crumbs , then pan fry. Makes a tasty dish.

When fishing in muddy water, we would keep the carp alive in fresh, clean water for a few days to get the mud out of their systems. Then they were pretty good eating. In clean water, just throw them on the grill and have at it!

Recently buried an old-timer who loved to fish for carp more than anything. 2 treble hooks on his rig. Top one had 3 kernels of corn and bottom one had frosted shredded wheat that he would dip in water and work till it became a sticky ball. This man kept a journal of every carp he caught and the year before his death I believe he caught over 500 carp! The largest one being somewhere in the 30lb category.

Biggest one I ever caught was on a fly rod with a locust as bait. Took about 2 hours to land ... we were "chasing" it in the pontoon boat! A lot of fun when you are in your teens!

I had a 10lber+ pull my canoe it was fighting so hard. They are a blast to catch, and the best fish by far for a beginner to fish for and have success catching the big ones.
