Went fishing today at the Shenango River Lake in PA my daughter caught this with a worm in about 20ft of water. Haven't the slightest clue what kind of fish this is. I would like to be able to tell her what she caught. Any help with the ID of it would be great.

Common Carp! I bet it gave her a great fight. When I was 12, I caught a 12lb one on 4, pound test - my most memorable catch!

No doubt. I'll never forget the first carp I caught. I thought I was snagged and went to break the line before the fish started peeling out drag....big sucker.

It was only about 3lbs but I had to help her reel it in. Sad thing is that's bigger than any fish I have ever caught.

She hooked onto another one later that I would have swore was a branch or log. But it was moving. Sadly it broke her line.

If you want some real fun fishing for Carp, go out early in the morning and take a few large cans of corn, open them and sling the corn far out into the water were you'll fish later, along w a can of creamed corn. (don't throw the cans in just the corn) come back 4 to 8 hrs later and bait hooks w a few pieces of corn on slip sinker rig, cast in the corned up area and hold on to the rod!! It can be nonstop action in the right area. I've done this from the bank, never from a boat but it should work anywhere there are good #s of these fish.

Last time we had the 17, year locust, the carp along with every thing else were gorging themselfs on them. Many fly rod guys were catching them on locust imitations. We use to catch carp on dough balls. We used Indian Head white corn meal with boiling water. We worked it for a while mixing in more corn meal until it was right- worked great. Corn also works well. Carp are a true gamefish as they will hit lures - usually small jigs. They are definately an underated fish - too bad they don't cook up good.

growing up, we lived on the river (no restrictions on carp here) and just for us kids, my dad made a carp feeder that work like a modern day deer feeder. he would feed the carp and all us kids would fish with 3 little peices of canned corn right under the dock. those were some fun times. I am almost 50 now and i still have some old friends tell me how much fun they had carp fishing at our house when we were kids.

Carp can be fun fishin! Nobody eats carp that I know of. As a child we made carp bait outa peanut butter corn flakes and big red soda. It worked pretty good. When I saw the old man mixing the big red bait up I thought he had a screw loose, but it worked.

Re: What did my daughter catch?

Many old timers grew up gigging them and bringing them home for their mothers to pressure cook and can. They say carp croquettes are pretty good. I've never had one, but there may come a day when we have to expand our notion of what we think is edible. I'm pretty sure the prohibition on baiting a hole with corn is due largely to the inability of fish to digest it, but I'm not positive.

I use corn or dough balls made of corn flakes and cherry cool-aid. They both work great for me.

carp aint to bad if you know how to clean and prepare. boney fillets is the drawback. they can be de boned but most wont go through the trouble. it has a bit stronger flavor than most. but they are fighters pound per pound as good as catfish. no restrictions here either. bows pitchforks gigs whetever you want to get em with. thick as thieves.

congrats. take her often. its good times.

Give them Carp a slow ride through the smoker. They are very good. Eat them as is out of the smoker. Also try this, flake some fish in a bowl and add diced onions and miracle whip. Spread on Ritz crackers, crack open a beer and enjoy.

Ye man! Growing up I always used corn.

On a side note....I took a lady fishing a few years back to a nearby pond on the golf course I lived on. She had never caught a fish. This particular pond was known for carp. After some chumming some corn we baited our old Zebco 202's and tossed them in. It was getting dark and after a couple minutes I hooked one up. When I got it to the bank there was a 6lb Bass on my line. The story is still being told around the clubhouse.

A couple weeks later at another nearby pond I was using a topwater jitterbug when a large carp came jumping out of the water with my lure in his mouth.......Ya just never know.

Congradulations on the young'un whipping up on Daddy!
