What could cause boat to not run beyond idle?

Gents-

Here is the story...I bought a 1989 Thundercraft Mercrusier 3.0 liter Alpha One outdrive last year. I never had a problem with her until last week. I was prepping for the 4th weekend and noticed that every once and a while, she would not do anything when I turned the key(would not crank) The marina mechanic suggested I replace the helper solonoid (on the engine block) So I did, it worked fine, no more starter problems. As luck would have it, it worked fine until I was 15 feet off the Torch River landing. The trim stopped working all together. I called the marina and they said to "hot wire" the trim at the trim pump (green down, blue up) So I did. I got out to the sand bar, parked and broke out my tool kit. I decided to just "hot wire" direct from the trim button on the throttle and eliminate what appeared to be a very corroded three prong switch and fuse assembly (just for the weekend) So now when I used the trim button at the handle I was in effect hot wiring the trim. This worked great all day and Saturday until out of nowhere at a high speed it bogged out as if out of gas. What is even more disturbing is that the trim button no longer engaged the trim motor. I had to manually hot wire the trim motor again (it works, not fryed) I believe the button is fryed now. Now the boat will only idle, as soon as I apply gas...it quits as if starving for fuel. I limped her home and now she sits with a very jerry rigged trim assembly and she wont run over idle. Could there be something back upstream from that trim button on the handle that could have been baked as a result of my constant hot wire scenerio? Would an ignition coil pack create this? Is there some electronic fuel system component that could have gotten baked? It is for sure related somehow to what I did with that hot wire job. Any help would be appreciated, my local marina are a bunch of crooks this time of year and I am not affraid to get dirty or experiment....it is actually fun.

Thanks,

Mike
