OK guys
you did so good on the Engine Balance question I got a couple more.

1. What color loctite do you use on the head bolts?
2. Do you use on all bolts during engine assembly such as head, reed plates and cooling covers, carb mounting and case halves? Being from auto background I hate to use the stuff but I know it helps in marine area.
If your wondering it's the same 1973 johnson 65 hp 3 cyl.
3. Where can I find tilt/trim cylinders repair kits. Also need the limit switch for left cyl.

ok thats 3 questions insted of 2 so shoot me :D .

Thanks again and Happy New year
no hurry not going back over to the shop till next week.

The loctite I use on machine bolt applications is "blue."Designed to inhibit vibration loosening.Wouldn't use it on the head cover bolts as they will need periodic re-torquing.

Use a light oil such as motor oil on head bolts, lubes them to give you a proper torque reading.

Re: What color loctite

Not trying to be argumentative ,but the torque figures I've always worked with were given as dry torque with holes cleanly tapped and bolts cleanly died. This method was incurred to prevent overtorquing. There is an inherent dilemma with dry however when applied to aluminum blocks and steel fasteners since the aluminum is prone to corrosion, particularly on head covers.

The service manual for your particular outboard should tell you whether or not to torque wet or dry, and where to use loctite. :)

I avoid loctite on aluminum unless specified, but always put a little on the reed screws.

If salt water engine I use OMC gasket sealer or aviation form a gasket by permatex, on head bolts, gearcase bolts, waterpump bolts, powerhead bolts. On stator and timer base screws manual calls for loctite blue,I use red. Upper and lower bearing housing screws I use red.

I use red on everything except head bolts. Where torqueing should take care of any problems with them backing out. PLus I have found out that it does a pretty good job of inhibiting corrosion.

I as also instructed to allways keep head bolts dry and spotlessly clean. This was to insure the torque specs given were acurate to the torque required. As fo everything else, I use whatever I grab first, unless the manual specs one or the other.
I use neversieze on anything else that is bolted into the water jacket.

Re: What color loctite

Clanton is correct about OMC products.Gasket sealer on the headbolts, especially in salt , unless instructed otherwise.Never graphite based anti seize. Most current four stroke outboards are having you oil the threads, and heads are applied torgue to yeild.Same torque to yeild is needed on many V6 obs. Bottom line, there is alot of product out there, and if you are working on just general principal alone, you run a good risk of blowing it.
