I wonder if he really shot the water or if he was trying to avoid the possibility of being hastled for shooting a bear out of season, or with a pistol or something like that. I'm sure nobody in there right mind would fine that guy for his actions, I just wonder if there was a little cya going on.

I would have shot that bear for sure. Maybe more than once.

I wouldn't think so in Alaska. Defensive shootings against Bears would be more understood - now if you had several bearskin rugs in your home from "defensive kills" they might start watching you a little.

I have watched this video many many times, its been one of my favorites for at least a couple years as I am a huge Fred Eichler fan and I can tell you this as a Veteran Hunter,

I think he shot the water because he(like I would be) was POOPING HIS PANTS!!!

that's just what we need. Bears getting on disability because someone shot their eyes out. Never mind, a lawyer would sue whoever did that and then he would go on disability. Maybe get a scooter from the scooter store too.

I agree that this would have been understood. Only a fool could watch that video and criticize the shooter for his actions. But we all know how bureaucracy works. It's possible that there is a policy that an investigation must be launched into "ANY" inappropriate shooting of wildlife. Manditory investigations in certain situations are certainlt nothing new. Any incident where a police officer discharges his weapon must be investigated for example. Even if he shoots a suffering deer that was hit by a car or something along those lines.

Also, it's pretty well known that shooting a deer from a car is a big no no. I wonder if shooting a bear from a boat is the same sort of violation?

I'm just saying, CYA makes the whole situation a mute point.

As a kid growing up we would vacation at Drumond Island, Mi first 2 weeks of aug. There was a teenage girl from Detroit would carry her Daisy red rider to shoot the bears. We always laughed about it, but guess she never saw one as she always returned from the hunt. Forgot all about it till this thread. roflmao

I would assume the man who shot the gun had it in his hand as soon as they saw the cubs. I've never been close to any, but I've heard about the mommas fierce defense of her babies since I was a kid. She must protect them from males who will kill them just to make her go into season sooner, or eat them. If she'll stand up to a big male bear, a man or men, w a big gun is no threat at all to her!!!

Oh yeah - Not too much beats a nicely built 1911 .45ACP. Even for as nice as a Glock shoots, a 1911 style (dialed in properly) is much more smooth. - - Sorry, total hijack there.

BB's won't kill Bears :D

Agreed.

I'm old school and a big guy, so I carry the old Springfield built (regular Army) 1911-A1. By the end of a day, I think it weighs 600#. Feels like.

The lovely and gracious, Mrs. DJ prefers a revolver (simple). In .38. While not the most effective load, it still sends a serious message. She went for the "LadySmith". At least it's not Pink-Black and SERIOUS!

Re: What are they thinking?

I'm thinking of getting one for squirrel hunting. They are more than capable of taking them, and may not scare the next one on my hitlist, like my .22 seems to!!!. I've tried subsonic rounds but they don't seem to be very accurate in my rifle, and still spook other squirrels in the area. I do enjoy shooting at them w a 30 round clip when they're running for there lives in trees or on the ground though:eek:. It makes me feel like a kid again sometimes:D Imagine a middle aged man, running through the woods chasing a bushytailed rodent. Shotguns are just to easy, not alot of fun using them for tree rats.

Some of those pellet rifles are as loud as a .22! I bought a Crossman Storm XT at wally world and the first time I shot it sounded like a 22 and shot a flame out of the barrel! After a few shot this phenomenon disappeared.....turns out that there was too much oil and the compression was causing it to diesel. At 1200fps it will take down rabbits and squirrels.

I'm jelous. Love the Springfield (have shot one several times). The Rock Island Armory 1911 is supposed to be pretty nice too - and I might be able to afford one of those. I carry a Taurus 9mm. It feels much the same by the end of the day - 600#. I've actually seen a couple of Ruger revolvers that I wouldn't mind adding in to the "carry collection." - oops, total hijack again.

Re: What are they thinking?

I was at wallyworld today and looked at some pellet air rifles while I was there. One brand had a photo of a large Brown Bear on the front of the box! I hope nobody's stupid enough to shoot one w an airgun! Why would the company do this? I'm baffled:confused:

They are probably thinking that if they put some empty tin cans, lined up on a fence post, or a paper, target with a half-dozen holes in it, on the box cover, people might not be as inclined, to buy one.

They call that marketing. ;)

Re: What are they thinking?

I guess alot of hunters started out shooting bb or pellet rifles, nobody should shoot a large cal. weapon the first time they hold or shoot a gun IMO, recipe for scareing someone away from the fun of guns or hunting. It just seemed silly and kinda false advertising to me that day. How bout pics of a rabbit or squirrel instead of the bear?

A fuzzy bunny or squirrel on the package wouldn't be great marketing. A fierce bear, albeit completely ridiculous, markets the bb or pellet gun better.

On bear guns...when I was living in Fairbanks, there was a 12-year old girl that was home alone in the family's trailer when a grizzly decided he wanted a visit to the kitchen buffet. The girl grabbed dad's .357 magnum and shot the bear as it put its head through the kitchen window.

The folks came home to a dead grizzly in the driveway.
