The children that are there on the dock, learn to act that way from their parents, and then their children learn to be disrespectful just a bit more than their parents and today society is just what we ended up,people who act like that at the dock.It is a slow breakdown of respect it seems to me.It is in everypart of our society. They are the reason I do not go to the busy lakes as well or I just go on a weekday.

Re: What are these people thinking???

I only bring my boat during the week. If I'm going to screw something up, I'd rather the witnesses be fewer.

amen to that!

i work 3rd shift so i can go boating during the day when ever i want to. i have had only had 1 problem unloading my boat the rope from bow cleat snaged the guild-ons so it bent some metal and broke a rope but no one seen me. i launch by myself so i have to tie the boat off then pull trailer out.

i must say the idiots on the docks and boat ramps are only missing common sense, if some one has to walk past you move you and your crap to the side. better yet move off the dock but that may be to much hastle. teenagers are the worst there parents dont talk to them so they hang out like theres nothing better to do to block everything off.

Lakes, especially in a populated or popular area where I live are often very crowded. I avoid these areas except when I need to test out the boat. And that is what I was doing last weekend. Finally, the outboard is running great, and I can avoid that lake for the foreseeable future.

I never run into any of this junk when boating on a bay. Never any lines, get to take your time. Things are better that way.

Similar problems here at the lake we are on. Our only saving grace is tha we put the boat in a slip and leave her there. We are close enough to watch the entertainment, but far enough away to avoid the possibility of damage. We only go to the marina store and fuel docks early in the morning on a week day though, the courtesy docks are another source of entertainment!

Re: What are these people thinking???

Was prepping to launch my boat in the mohawk river couple weeks ago. Very dirty river where i was. A family consisting of mother father and 2 kids were using the dock as a sun bathing platform/diving board. They had all thier belongings on the dock. I knew this was going to be a problem. As im launching the boat and tying off myself, the little girl is asking me all sorts of questions. You name it, she asked it. Is that your boat? Does it go fast? How do u drive it? What are u doing now ? All the while the mother admired smilingly. It wasn't until the mother realized that i was WAY TO BUSY launching a boat by myself and ignoring the child entirely, that she finally decided to remove the children off the dock.

i agree people are selfish these days. when i launch i do it fast, and be polite and don't be in anyones way. its interensting when it comes to fisherman, and i mean fisherman not weekend warriors, where i fish at melones res in cali there can be upwards of 40-60 boats at the launch at 4 in the morning on a week day, again hard core fisherman, and it will only take them about 45 mins for everyone to launch it is quite a feat to observe. its like an orchistra all working in a flawless motion to get in the water no one is yelling or giving any problems as a fact they help hold eachothers boats while parking there trucks and its only a ramp wide enought for 4 boats at a time. and about 11 oclock there all gone out of the lake just in time to avoid the skiers and pleasure boaters, that is a mess watching all of them go for it

The simple explanation is that fully one half of the people in the world are below average intelligence. I learned that in a statistics class I took years ago but I didn't know it was right until forty or so years of being around boat ramps proved it to me.

Man, that's like a whole qaurter. Sorry, I had too

What clueless people may look like...

Yep, massive parking lot, yet they not only decide they want to sit on the dock to cool off their feet, but also park 2 vehicles in the way. At least they were considerate enough to only block half of it off, i'm actually somewhat surprised.

Don't forget there is a big difference between inexperienced and inconsiderate.. one I don't mind waiting for and being patient. HECK I'll even led a hand. but the other... those I just HOPE have a crappy day that ends in a tow truck or worse.

Unfortunately there a lot more of the later...

the ones I hate most are the teenage punks in their daddies $100,000 boat that don't have a clue except... "this boat is gonna get me laid"

Re: What are these people thinking???

Last sunday I tied the boat off and headed up to get the truck. I saw this guy in a Mini Cooper driving down towards the ramp. The ramp we were at is about 15 feet lower than the staging area behind thick cottonwoods and willows and has a reasonable sized roundish area to turn around and get positioned. Anyway, I pull the truck down to the ramp and lo and behold here's Mr Mini Cooper sitting in the middle of the turn around area at the ramp just staring off into the distance oblivious to my presence. So what do I do? I pulled in front of the guy and circled AROUND his tiny car to get lined up with the ramp like he wasn't even there. He about shat himself to say the least. He yells something at me as I'm backing my truck down to the wife and boat. I got out of the truck and look at him and he gives me this "Hey, didn't you see me here?" look and I gave him the finger. Newsflash buddy, you don't belong here!

Re: What are these people thinking???

Not all dock dwellers are clueless jerks-but sure I have ran into them.
I took off a little early one week day and took my elderly Father "fishing". There was an Immigrant family enjoying a day at the lake- there was no other boats at the ramp but us. Yes the kids & thier stuff was all over the dock but when we came back to the dock they tied off our lines, and when the Father saw my Old Dad & me needing assistance getting him from the boat to the dock ran over and lent him a hand. I'm glad they were there.

Many times I have come to the dock late at night to find people fishing on it. There is a 1/4 mile No Wake zone so they see me comming with plenty of notice. I just pull up like I own the dock, which I pay $35 a year to use. You only have to pay if you park a boat trailer.
I always ask them " How's fishin?" never had any issues.

Re: What are these people thinking???

I occasionally take my boat to a small city lake, it has a "one" wide ramp, and one of those 3 foot wobbly docks as well. Even though you can get to the water anywhere along the lakes edge to fish, there is ALWAYS about 6 people fishing with 2 poles each on the 10 foot long dock.

Being the jerk that I am, I leave my trolling motor running on low the whole time I'm tied to the dock getting the trailer backed down.
I get a chuckle every time it empties all the line off sombodies rod, or pulls a rod into the lake. Sometimes the rods drag up the ramp behind the boat when I leave, I OF COURSE act like I dont see it, and watch them in my rearview mirror trying to catch up with it as I drive away (just a hair faster than they are chasing).
It really makes it worthwhile, cleaning all the line out of the motor later!
The "repeat offenders", KNOW my boat now, and vacate as I'm pulling in. :)
But like I said, being the jerk that I am, I find humor in the simple things.

Your statement also says half of the people in the world are above average intelligence. Yep, that's the definition of average. You forgot that the lower half and the upper half have no common sense and in today's world, too much selfishness. It's not a lack of smarts problem.

Never boat on weekends or holidays using public ramps.

I don't mean to be a pedant but the center of a group of subjects doesn't indicate the average.

It would be more accurate to say that roughly half the people in the world are below the median intelligence.
