what are good seats for rowing?

We have a 13-foot jon boat that we take rowing on small Midwestern rivers. Now we have canoe seats installed for the rowers, but they are not good. Our fannies get jammed into the gap between the back and the seat. That gets painful after a while. Also, the canoe seats are very hard.

Can anybody recommend good seats for rowing in?

Some of us are pretty heavy, so the seats need to be strong enough to take the load of a really big person moving back and forth.

Given a good seat, we can think of some way to attach it, so don't worry about how it will be attached.

I want to hear opinions for others of course.

What do you think...can they be seats with backs or not?

From what I have seen though, folding seats like these are popular in jon boats:
http://www.iboats.com/mall/?prod_id=52320

You can fold them down to step over them if need be. And if you have a boat cover you can choose to keep them folded up or down, depending on what you want. You have your choice betweeen padded on hard seats. They are low cost and I think you could row okay with them.

Some people really get into their rowing and move back and forth a lot. As long as you don't need to get overly aggressive then these may work okay.

THE best seat is one in the way back where there are no oars and all you can do is sit back and drink your beer and tell the guy rowing "If I had not dislocated my arm helping you launch I could row for a while....sip sip sip"

Re: what are good seats for rowing?

Thanks for the suggestion about folding seats, bayman. They would make it easier to get in and out of the boat. I like the looks of the gray one with the back that seems to be tilted back.

tomatolord, the person who sits on the back deck has the worst of it. Rowing a boat is like being in a rocking chair. As one rows, one's weight is constantly being carried by different muscles. I'm not strong at all, but I can row for hours.

For years I have daydreamed of having miniature platform rockers for the non-rowing passengers. Don't know how to accomplish that, though.

I don't know but I would imagine for what you would spend on new seats you might be able to find a small used outboard.

But if you enjoy the rowing go for it.
