hi all I have recently received my dads old boat, along with a 1985/86 Evinrude 25 hp outboard (model noE25ELCRS serial No BOO7319) Now here's the thing. When I got it she was running a bit rough, coughing and backfiring, so I spoke to my local marine engineer and he said it sounded like the throttle cam adjustment ect. So being the genius I am I bought the manual and set about adjusting... You guessed it now it wont start at all, I have followed the book to the best of my ability but to no avail, can anyone out there give me instruction on how to set the throttle cam, as I have now been on it for 3 days and am slowly loosing my sanity. The engine back fires when i turn the key, if i open the throttle too far it stops firing and floods. Please help an enthusiastic but embarrassed WALLY... Oh by the way it is A CD2 model if this helps....

Howdy Novice.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Well, first of all that is a 1984, not a 1985-6.

Is the "backfire" loud and out the exhaust, or is it more of a cough through the carbs?

Sounds like you may be far out of time. . . like with a sheared flywheel key or reversed plug wires.

Hi there it is more a bang out of the exhaust, than out of the carb, and when it go's the water in the test tank splashes out..

Spark plug wires reversed. Anybody been messing with any of the other wires? Sensor wires crossed or the orange coil wires crossed will do it too. And, last but not least, so will a sheared flywheel key. Especially if somebody has had it off and didn't use a torque wrench to tighten it to correct specs when reinstalling it. Happens all the time to novices.

Hi no wires have been removed, but I will check the key way, as the fly wheel was remove before I got it from dad, but I still think it is the throttle cam adjustment as it is all i have adjusted.. thanks all

Hi all, well as I said earlier I would get the key, this proved to be harder than I expected. After several phone calls and over 150 miles I finally found one, it was fitted by ME ( the wally) and tightened down to 120. I must say with the first turn of the key she burst into life and ran for over an hour without missing a beat. I then checked the nut, just to make sure.
Once again thank you all for your help, it was priceless..
