Re: were do you shop and recommended.

walmart put kmart and those type of places out of biz because of their everyday low pricing strategy. kmart couldnt compete and target can compete because they advertise for the middle to upper middle class and make themselves sound fancier than walmart.. Marketing class lol..

As for the original topic .. i start at iboats. if i can't find what im looking for overtons. if i need it now ill go to petzolds.

(sound of organ playing) CAN I GET AN AMEN? I am proudly 2 years Walmart sober. I will clip coupons and make 10 stops just to not go to walmart. I offer the walmart challenge to anyone. Lay off shopping at walmart for 90 days and then go back one time. If you still want to shop there then it was just ment to be. For specialty items I like to shop at specialty stores. The price may be more but the knowledge and customer service is worth it, well kinda like iboats, which just happens to be where i get my BOATING parts.

1/3 of America goes into a Walmart every week.
Walmart put K mart out of business, which put Roses out of business, and all the way back. Although the handful of posters here would pay more and go elsewhere, statistically speaking, customer loyalty and sales are driven by one thing only: low prices. And the appearance of low prices--there's another story there.

Online... iboats. Locally, I've got two boating stores. I really like Attwood boat cleaning/polishing/waxing products. My local boating stores don't carry them, but WallyWorld does.

I've dealt with iboats, WM, Overtons.... but I always try to buy local when I can. I try to keep my money around here.... just a personal preference. ;)

Re: were do you shop and recommended.

I'm sure I am like others here in that I hate Walmart. Not for their business practices (I think their model is great) but I hate crowds. I will go there at 6 am or midnight. Other than that I buy somewhere else. For parts or if it is something I'm searching for, I will pay for the expertise. I love going into my local hardware store and trying to explain what I'm trying to build and the guy helps me, at the orange store they just stare. I love that my local stoe just drops stuff in my driveway when I order and I go down and pay when I get off work. So, bottom line is local gets the business if the have it, othewise I wait until things die down and go to wally world, and if I have to order Iboats is the place.

if its online then i shop at iboats. if i need tackle or some on-board necessity thin i shop at a local marina here. the prices are a little higher then walmart but its local. and the owner is a very nice knowledgeable man that is a veteran. he gives a 15% discount to veterans which i am, so even if you were to think about money that makes it about even. only problem is that this time of the year hes rarely there.

I will tell you what I think, guys. This forum is like a garden from which we reap huge harvests of knowledge and fellowship with other boaters.

Like any garden, nuture, water and fertilize it to keep your free harvest healthy.

Patronizing iboats is how we do that.

Oh I've seen lots of fertilizer over the last couple years..lol

Re: were do you shop and recommended.

I do most of my shopping at iboats. Grocery shopping is still usually at Walmart because there are no stores open after 10pm and we have an unusual schedule. I WISH there were somewhere else to go. We miss all the competitors in Cincinnati that were open 24hrs.

I hate to go out to shop, but I love mail order I check IBoats first, then Cabelas, Bass Pro and/or Overtons. Ebay last.

If I need it right away, I go to my local "discount marine store". A few miles from my house is a dealer that has been in business since the late 1940's. He sells brand name items and in most cases they are 15-20% below ANY of the other catalogs. Sales tax, but no shipping charge, so it breaks even. The downside is that he may be out of stock on some popular items and he doesn't custom order.

If he's out, I drive 6 blocks away and go to West Marine. They always have what I need.

I know lots of people bash West, but did you know that they can get ANYTHING for you. For example, I redid one of my trailers last year and needed a bunch of different odd size Stoltz rollers. The Stoltz website had them , but they don't sell retail. It wasn't in any of the catalogs, not even West. The guy at West opened the Stoltz web site to get part numbers and they were shipped out that same day. I demand good service and I don't mind paying more for it.

Re: were do you shop and recommended.

I'm 100% iboats. There's a distribution center 2 miles away..anything I order is next day for me. It often times cost more in gas to get to a store that *might* have what I need, than to pay the shipping charge. Plus...I'm helping to keep the local distribution center people employed too! So...I see it as a win, win, win.

I guess I'm kinda lucky. I have a West Marine nearby (not my first choice) and Defender is 7 miles away for their only retail outlet. iBoats is a great source I have used. Cabelas is a little less than an hour away too.

Re: were do you shop and recommended.

i Don't have any of those stores near me other then west marine. i do have a few boating shops that sell odds and end for boating not a huge surplus of stuff. i have two boat shops in my town and iv'e only bin to one for a prop just because the owner knows what he's talking about when it comes to props and has all the catalogs of all motors and stuff it's pretty cool i tell him my motor and year he finds the catalog and a $150 later i got a new prop. i also boat some trailer brackets off them probably go back. i am going to try boats more the thing is i like to see what i'm getting before i get it so i know it's right.

Re: were do you shop and recommended.

Sorry, but price matching is so lame. I never go through the trouble anymore to call in and price match. The lowest price gets the business.

Exactly, I feel the same way on their price match thing. they advertise this, but you have to jump through hoops to get them to do it! seems they always have some caveat that their price match does not apply too. I also gave up trying to get iboats to price match. Not worth the time and effort.

West Marine carries mostly crap made in China at double and triple the prices. But when something breaks and you need it now, they have a store not far from where ever you are. They are also great for their sales at the start of the season. They sell a lot of needed stuff real cheap like flares, vests, cleaning stuff, boat shoes etc as door buster specials in those early flyer's to get you into the store. Sign up on their website for their flyer's.

Overton's used to be good until they merged with Gander Mountain now they both have mostly crap made in China.
Cabelas is about the same as the others but they have become more camping and clothing oriented.
Bass Pro is the same, nice stores but mostly junk quality.

Walmart has a decent online boating selection too and free shipping to a store for local pick up. Amazon ships free over $25 as long as you don't buy from one of their other vendors.

Ebay is great too for finding hard to find boating items. I get my down rigger items off Ebay, lures, flashers, weights etc

I always check in with iboats because they sometimes surprise me as to how low they can be for certain items, but I've had bad luck with them ordering parts like carb kits, outboard parts etc. I get the motor apart and find they sent me the wrong part and then I have to send it back again. They do pay for the shipping back though when it's their error.

At the start of each season I usually make a list of the items I need and put one order in with the store that has most of the items in stock. Most stores give you free shipping anyway when your order is over $100. Most will give you a 10-20% discount if you just call in and ask them for one with a big order, especially at the start of the season, like a bimini top etc

During the season, I usually just google the item I'm looking for and go with the lower cost provider. Watch out for shops that low ball a price for an item, but then inflate the shipping (you also don't get the inflated shipping back if you return the item).

Overall iboats is competitive and they ship fast with good customer service. But I find all shops offer good customer service, fast shipping, some free shipping and no sales tax. They know boaters don't just buy one item. I probably spend $1000 on accessories at the start of each season! I get swamped with catalogs each year from many vendors and I always enjoy going through them looking for new stuff . . . They make for excellent toilet reading material :) :D :)

Re: were do you shop and recommended.

Expidia, extremely informative analysis and roll-up of shopping information. Very useful.

All -Unfortunately, in Richmond Hill, GA where I live, it's WM, Bass Pro Shops, or Walmart for stuff you need right away. All of these stores are in Savannah, which is about a 25 min drive from my house. Not much of a good, quality selection of places to shop for boating stuff you need without waiting for the mail. However, generally you can find what you need at one of these three stores. WM is usually my last resort, as I, too, feel their prices are insanely high although they do provide good customer service when I do end up going in that place. I did not know they had those "blowout sales". I'll have to check them out. I have yet to purchase anything on iboats, but I do intend on trying their stuff this spring/summer. With gas prices shooting to the moon, I fully intend to do alot more online shopping than I used to. Especially if shipping is free, it's a no-brainer. I'd rather save the gas $$ to fuel up the aquasled! Love this site, keep fertilizing it (as someone previously mentioned)!
