I have been looking at different jigs, I found one that would allow me to do AR-15 and AR-10 with the same kit, a little more expensive, but I would like to build a couple of AR-10 models as well, I love the .308 round for general purpose stuff, I guess I have got the bug, now my wife really thinks I am nutty! Been looking at milling machines as well, there are a couple of really nice ones out there that are not real expensive.

I have done several 80% builds using the referenced lowers. I went the raw blanks (without anodizing), this allows for finishing the lower however you like and also insures there is no untreated aluminum where the post anodizing machining is done. As for the finish par I went with a glass beading to give the surfaces some texture. I also have a Plater that does mil spec anodizing. I'm looking at doing a few AR-10 in .308 next. I think I'll stick with Ares Armour as the AR-15 lowers were topcnotch.

That is what is nice about living in America, we all still have the ability to waste our hard earned dollars in the way we choose to, I already have a lot of old Winchesters and Sharps, so I now choose to waste my money on AR's and Old boats, but thanks for your input.

WOW S A Baker. That IS a bold statement indeed. I have some of everything and never sell any guns myself. And I will enjoy milling out some AR15 lowers myself. Things like that interest me. Do I actually need more AR's? Probably not. But what does that have to do with anything.

MT, I have created an account with that same company. But I don't see any package deals on there. :noidea:

Ya GM, I emailed them again this morning to make sure all is ok, I know the SHOT was last week, so perhaps they have a few things in the works due to extra business, because they come highly recommended, even one of the other users on here says he buys his lowers from them, I don't know why the package is not showing up now, but it figures I order from them, tell people about it and it is not able to be found by anybody else! Who Knows!

MTboatguy, I will keep looking for it again. If nothing shows, I will try 80% - lower.com. I have no idea if they have any in stock, but we'll see. :noidea:

Either way, I can wait if I have to.

I have been looking at bench top mills the last couple of days, something to play with that I can use with boat parts also, and had a guy email me this morning and offered me 2 Bridgeport series II mills for a $1000 bucks, then I went and looked at a picture of the, darn things are floor standing mills that weigh about 4000 lbs each! cripes I would never have a place to put those up, I would have to build a new shop!

Well, if you are jumping in with both feet ... build a new shop for the new hobby ... can I get one of your builds? I can be out there to pick it up in early October ...

I don't believe it is quite above board to sell guns without serial numbers on them!

That brings up a question, never built an AR or any other gun for that matter. What does someone do if they build one and later decide to sell it?

If you are not licensed to manufacture, you can't legally sell or even give it away, as I have a FFL/SOT that allows me to manufacture, I can serialize them and sell if I wanted to, but really all I am doing it for, is to add another hobby to my list of things to do and to have a few extras around here when friends drop by and want to go shooting around the house here. I will probably end up building a couple of AR-10's and maybe a couple of Colt 1911 pistols as well, my grandsons and nephews are going to love it when I kick the bucket, but I will make sure they are marked before that day comes so they will be legal to leave to others.

Well Ares finally got back to me, they were not in the shop when I ordered, but they let me know that their lowers are out at the anodizers, and won't be ready to ship for somewhere around 2-4 weeks. So if are going to order from Ares, keep that in mind and they said they were re-evaluating the 5 pack sales again.

Interesting article about manufacturing guns...

I'm not a gun guy, but I find this article scary interesting! This kid's tenacity is way outside the box! I fist saw him on documentary about 3D printers. I actually applaude his efforts!

I have read a lot about the Ghost Gunner and actually seen one in action here locally a couple of weeks ago, it is not quite as easy as they make it sound, but it is able to mill the lowers on the road to a fully operational semi automatic sporting rifle, they are also working on the software to mill 80% Colt 1911 guns as well, there are actually quite a few 80% guns you can buy and finish yourself these days. Does make for an interesting oxymoron situation in this country.

I had to do something today, I ran the darn diesel plow truck out of fuel last night, you know how hard it is to start a diesel when it is 16 degrees outside and you ran it out of fuel!, then I had to buy 2 new batteries for it today, that was money I didn't want to waste on something I needed, I would have rather wasted it on something I didn't need!

That's the worst thing to do is run a diesel out of fuel. You have to start bleeding just to get the fuel flowing again and -16, not fun......

But I digress...... :)

Well Wim, I ran it out once before and was able to get it started without bleeding, so I am hoping it warms up enough today to play with it and get it fired back up, suppose to warm up into the 40's, so I will keep trying.
