Hi all! Newbie here to boating. Joined the forum a few days ago. Got a 12ft 1969 Cadorette for cheap. The fibreglass is good but the transom was basically rotted out but previous owners had patched and patched and patched. Well I couldnt sleep much last night so I went out to my shop and took the zip saw and cut the interior layer away to reveal a whole bunch of rotten wood. Ripped it all out and will be off to get some exterior grade plywood to build a new one. Will make a pattern from the stern and use that as a guide trimming where needed to slide it in place. Hey this is the first time I've worked on a boat in my life and its great fun! Have worked on RVs and automobiles but this is just different somehow!

Re: Well...here it goes!

Welcome to iboats.

You appear to be on the right path and if the transom is the only needed repair then it should be quick.

It's not rocket science ........... but it can be time consuming the first time. The "normal" transom is usually constructed with 2 pieces (layers) of 3/4 " plywood for thickness.

If you get jammed up .....just ask!!
