Welch plugs

I purchased a 1961 Evinrude 5.5 hp. It ran great in a bucket but on my trial run it ran hot and water was coming from the engine cowling. After further inspection it is coming from what I think is an expansion or Welch plug. Water was flowing out correctly but also from this small plug. Im thinking the thermostat could have failed causing hot temps to blow the Welch plug. Still runs. Any advise would be great.

most likely the impeller failed and the motor overheated

stored in freezing temps over the winter? Freeze plug opening up might have prevented a cracked block. See if it heats up with the plug back in place. Should run at about 140F or a little less.

Purchased it from a guy in South Alabama. We did get some freezing temps at night this winter. I need to buy a new plug to test that. Thanks

If it is the plug on the bottom of the cylinder head , they some times fall out..----Just replace it.

Those things are made of thin, soft metal and rot out. Just replace it (all of them) and get on with life.
