Weird situation, looking for advice/how to repair

Well I’ve officially made my 15 hp into a parts motor! not been a good 2 weeks for this motor. I’ve been a sad owner

I made a complete moron move is the short version of the story.

Long version is….I thought it would be a great idea to clean some of the areas under the cowling while I had parts off. I sprayed a bunch of brake cleaner to get some of the nasty gunk and grease from off the motor. I also had to heat up the lower cowling to bend it back. I get out my torch and start heating up the lower cowling to work on the motor. I’ve got a bunch of wet brake fluid all over the motor. It goes up in flames. I’ve got a fire extinguisher in my garage so I got it and put out the fire in 5-10 seconds. I’m lucky I didn’t get hurt or deal with an explosion. My motor was cooked pretty well in the process. It’s full of fire extinguisher dust at this time.

I’m going to try to find another 9.9/15 and get it up and going again. My carb is still good and was off at the time

Well that’s unfortunate but it doesn’t sound like the end of the world. I’m thinking with some TLC it would be salvageable.

I’ll see what I can do to get it running. Legitimately one of the dumbest things I’ve done in recent memory unfortunately.

The front clip is broke of on my motor and I just use a piece of gorilla tape. If you get it running again I'm sure a couple piece of tape will hold it on enough that it won't blow off going down the road.

Latest update on this motor: my lower cowling came in. I ended up breaking 2 bolt heads off trying to remove the power head. I’ve never had a bolt head break off before, and unfortunately it looks like these are in a really bad place for that to happen

Did they break off above or below the the block?
Either way they can be removed. This is a pretty common thing to happen. Soak them with penetrating for awhile before doing anything.
If above you maybe able to grab them with vise grips and try working them back and forth. Don’t try to spin them out all in at once. If below they can be drilled out just keep on center and slowly increase the hole size until you can chase the threads clean.

Unfortunately they’re both from the underneath side.

There are 3 bolts / mounts that hold cowling to the engine.----There are 6 bolts under the block to remove the powerhead.----I am not sure you are going about this the right way.

I successfully removed the 3 bolts holding the power head onto the cowling. I snapped 2 of the 6 bolts that you’re talking about. I can take better pictures if it helps

I’m wanting to pull the power head to replace the lower cowling. The center bolts from the bottom side are broke off. I’m unable to remove the power head until I get these removed.

If you snapped the bolt heads off you should be able to remove the powerhead.-----But first remove the lower unit incase the driveshaft is rusted in the crankshaft.-----Not sure if I would want to tackle your project.-----I would use that as a " parts only " motor.----Looks like a well worn / neglected motor even before the fire.

I think you’re ultimately correct. Probably more work than it’s worth.

Put it up on marketplace as parts motor. 120/120 compression still just checked

How reasonable/hard would it be for me to turn a short shaft 9.9 into a long shaft 15? I’ve got all the stuff here a have found a few non running ss 9.9s. I’ll move on from this motor gladly but thought this might be a decently viable option before throwing in the towel.

To go from short to long you'll need 3 pieces: An exhaust housing extension. Driveshaft. And shift rod. The copper line is also easily extended.

That’s great news because I’ve got all that stuff with this 15 hp. I don’t think that will be too hard.
