Re: Weekly Q&A (6/13-6/19)

Outboard not functional, no radio and cell phone too wet to work. ;)

The reason for this question is because at 4 P.M. yesterday we had to rescue a buddy of ours in his 17' Cajun in nearly the same predicament, except his cell worked. But he was bailing his butt off when we got there.

1. What is your favorite boat accessory?
Trim tabs
2. What is the most exciting fish you've ever caught?
Musky
3. What is your favorite lure? (pics welcome)
J-Plug
4. Have you ever found a real bargain at a garage sale, & if so, what?
Nope
5. What is your favorite live bait?
Shiners
6. What is printed on your favorite fishin cap?
The letter G
7. What is your favorite sport? Team?
Love to play basketball, favorite team GB Packers
8. Do you clean your fish the day you catch them, or ice them down and clean the next day?
Clean that day
9. Do you freeze your fish in water?
Yes
10.If your boat took water over the bow, the bilge was not functioning and you were sinking, what would be your strategy?
Might drop the cooling line on the engine and use the engines water pump to evacuate water until she ran hot or I sank.

LF you posted while I was messin' with this, in that situation, well there is no better pump in the world than a scared sailor with a bucket. Tough to answer without more information. Was it high seas that swamped the boat or a wake from a passing boat, we he in danger from more waves? Did he have a live well he could scavenge a pump from, were the batteries dead if so toss out, reduce weight every way possible, how many people, type of boat, etc. If he had floatation aft did he move enough weight to the stern to raise the bow and set a sea anchor of some sort, to keep the raised bow into the waves? Were there plastic tarps aboard to attempt to shed water, How many coolers did he have on board and what type, good floatation devise (tie off securely low in the boat to again bolster floatation), life jackets what type, use extra life jackets strung with line under the boat to bolster floatation, amount of line available, collect flashlight, whistle, mirror, and flares and Keep dry and available, the situation would dictate the action.

Going into lake Michigan at this time of year is not an option. I would try everything I could think of before I gave up on draining the boat.
