Re: Weber 4 barral carb loading up with fuel

We're not discussing Ford flathead V8's here, we are discussing 1995 Mercruiser Chevy 5.7 V8 engines, and they DO NOT come with spacer gaskets for the fuel pump.

No but its a proven concept that works. That decreasing the stroke of the fuel pump arm will decrease the fuel pressure.

I would never suggest doubling up on a gasket, but they do come in different thicknesses. This is also to be used on NEW pumps that are only 1-2 lbs over pressure...

I'm all for finding the right answer. I'm sure the ethonol will never help anything, and I'm not planning to search other forums, it's killing me to type this much. If anyone has the answer let me know, or I'll eventually do the same because I can't give up now.

The answer is right in front of your face. Your fuel pump is bad. Yes this can be a symptom of a worn pump. (diaphragm elasticity)Your fuel pump must be changed to match the inlet fuel pressure of your carb,Plain and simple. Fix that and you're off and boating. However you decide to do that is up to you. Thanks Alpheus, something to think about. Electric maybe sounding good about now.

An electric pump must be marine rated, and wired through something on the engine that prevents it from running when the engine is NOT running. Replace the mechanical pump with a new one.

So I went to the speed shop and had no luck finding a thick gasket. What I did find was a chrome mounting plate. The end outcome was I doubled up on mounting plates and it brought the fuel pressure down to 7 3/4. The engine idles fine and ran smooth in the water at 3 grand. After I break it in a while I'll open it up.

Glad you got it working, but when a thicker gasket was suggested it was only by maybe .012-.015 compressed thickness difference to lower your pressure by maybe .5 - 1 lb for just fine tuning purpose. You have it shimmed pretty far out and that may allow your push rod to be slapping on the fuel pump cam lobe. This may cause premature cam failure.

Its your boat and you can do what you want, but I'm just putting that out there for you to consider...

It's a mechanical pump. It was suggested to me by a parts man who deals with Mercruiser to try a thicker gasket.

I just had this EXACT problem with a new fuel pump on a Mercruiser 228R. The thicker gasket was the solution. Do a thread search for "Strange Can of Worms". It will list the part number of the thicker gasket.

I was looking for that post and couldn't find it and now I know why. How is anyone that uses the search function to find any info about a pump that puts out to much pressure supposed to find anything if you have a title called "Strange can of worms"?

This post has real good info, but because of the title, do you think anyone would give it a second glance?

Food for thought...
