What's the consensus here on waxing after painting with marine paint? I can't seem to find anything that indicates what amount of time is required to wait before a person can apply wax to a freshly painted boat.

I would wait a few weeks depending on the temp and humidity for it to completely cure.

Re: Waxing after painting

That was my thought, but my buddy is painting his boat ( has been over the last 3 weeks ) and is hell bound to wax it before he takes it out tomorrow. I worry he's going to cause blushing or other problems with the paint if he rushes it. ( he's known to have limited patience in matters like this, so I'm trying to get concrete evidence to the contrary that he should wait to wax the thing ). The topper I'm painting won't see wax until next year at the earliest, at the rate that I go with things like this. I'll wait until next spring and then wet sand, and buff out with rubbing compound, then wax it.

I would think it kind off depends what marine paint you use but I would wait a month if it was me.

typicaly 1 month is good, some paints are more some are less, the reason why you don't want to wax too soon after painting is it will trap the solvent vapors and cause your nice paint job to look like ****.

If he must wax then recommend to him that he use a pure carnuba wax. Absolutely nothing with cleaners, compounds, etc. And yes, 30 days is a good time frame.

Thanks for the replies. He bought boat wax, nothing to bring back the shine type stuff...meguires brand I believe, so it should be good stuff. I warned him not to push it, so I guess we'll just have to see what happens. He plans to paint more coats of clear on it...if something goes bad, will a wet sand and the clear coat bring it back? I'm not much of a paint expert per se, I just deal with oil and water based polyurethanes everyday for wood floors, so I don't have much experience with enamels other than what I dealt with when I built models as a kid.
