Re: Wax Stripping - Restoration

The oxidization has been removed during the process, so the color stays true.
If you remove all of the oxidized material and keep it waxed with marine wax it will be years before you need to buff again.

That is good news. I was wondering the same thing. I just started this process yesterday and only got through 1/4 of the boat in a little over 2 hours. I would hate to do this every season.

Ok will do. I just refurbished trailer and didn't do that and wished I had. Mostly becuase it took me some time to figure out how it went back together.

I have learned the hard way to take a picture of everything and categorize them as I go. iphone has been a great help with this

This one took 73 hours (Total time, my personal boat) but most that we see at the shop we can get done in under 20 hours (@20'). The hand sanding takes the longest as we get every last bit of oxidization off.

That is good advice I had to find owners manual online to figure out how the bottom roller went on.Anyway - Not sure if I can work on this weekend or not. Sounds likem a larhge undertaking even with an orbital buffer. It is suppsed to be in the low to mid 80's so not the best waxing weather during the day any way.

I was thought 3M wax restorer was supposed to get rid of oxidastion. Is sanding necessary?

How do you know when you have sanded enough?

My boat looks like the right side of the first pick, is that after the wet sanding? If not, which step of the process is that? Mine looks pretty nice when I wax it, though it looks like I should not be using car wax.

It is after wet sanding.
The Finesse-It will remove oxidization from the surface but sanding did it quicker in this circumstance. Most boats we do don't need wet sanding.
Car wax works very well, its just engineered for cars.

I guess you got me hooked, I am going to drop by west marine today. Should I get a buffer as harbor freight is near there?

Yes, get the variable speed buffer that Thalasso mentioned and get the extended warranty. We stopped rebuilding the professional Porter-Cable buffers in favor of this unit.

Got back from WM and HF not to long ago. Got a 3M boat wax, the other two 3M products QM mentioned and variable speed buffer.

I am going to wash my boat and see how things go today. As the corrosion is only really visible on the green portion of the boat I will try that area first :)

Here is what mine looks like after sand, buff, and polish. Still needs wax. As I posted earlier, I am only about 1/4 done.

Thanks. I am really happy with how it is coming out. I really thought I was going to have to repaint.

Thanks Hostage. Funny, West Marine and harbor freight are very close to each other here also.

I am going to try the Dawn dish soap thing first and see if that is all I need.
