Is it nexcessary to remove wax prior to running the buffer over it?

Its not really wax, its a polimer. Started using NU Finish on the hull.

you have wax left? by the time i get around to waxing, i've used it and washed it many times. whatever wax is left, and there is some, i just go over with the new wax. works ok for me.

if ya wanna remove the old. wash it with dawn instead of boat wash a few times. it'll be gone..

Re: Wax removal prior to buffing?

I use the buffer to apply the wax and a clean rag and elbow grease to remove the wax. When done, I use a think buffing head to go over everything for a final polish and remove anything I missed with the rag. It would take A LOT of buffing heads to remove wax with a buffer.

However, are you asking about removing the wax in preparation of using NU finish? Are you asking about removing the NU Finish Polimer. The question isn't completely clear.

If you are talking about removing old wax before you apply new then yes I remove it
Aceton will do the job then wash then new wax or compound and then polish and wax (what ever the gel coat needs)
stay away from stripes

I agree with ziggy. Use Dawn to strip the old wax off.

Don't use acetone or any other strong solvent! It might appear that it does great job at the beginning but what you actually are doing is striping the oil from the gell coat and it will cause early oxidation. Dawn or just about any other liquid dish soap will work great and if you are real picky you can clay bar the surface after washing and then apply a good wax. As others mentioned use buffer to apply and soft terry towel to polish out.

Acetone is just fine but it should be diluted with water to 10 percent acetone/90 percent water. Works great!
