I have a Johnson Fast Strike 115. Not sure on the year but I noticed last time I was on the lake, when running water was spraying up onto the back deck of the boat. When I hooked it to the hose at home and started it, I see water comming from just above the cavitation plate where the bracket attaches the motor to the main mount. I can not see exactly where the water is comming from due to the bracket covers and mounting plate. Is there a seal in this area where the motor mounts to the main bracket? I have not hit anything when running and the lower unit is not cracked. Any ideas or information would be appreciated. I can post pictures or even a video if needed.

Re: Waterflow

Water coming from the area you describe (bottom motor mount area) is a normal water outlet.

Did you recently install that engine on the present boat, changing it over from another boat?

Does the engine now kick up what is called a water rooster tail when underway? Wondering if you have a long shaft engine installed on a short shaft boat OR having a proper shaft engine mounted too low.

Re: Waterflow

No, I have had this boat for about 3 years and have never had this before. Even when running out of water with the water ears I have never seen water come from this area. There is a water outlet on the front of the motor in this area but i have never seen it come from under the motor mount before and it has never sprayed onto the back deck when running on the lake. I still have plenty of water circulating and keeping the motor cool as there is still a strong water stream coming from all the outlets but it just seems awkward that it would all of a sudden start doing this and I would prefer to fix it rather than chance it.

Okay... perhaps I am not visualizing the exact area you say water is flowing from. However there should be water outlet holes behind those bottom motor mount covers, if this is the area you spek of, to allow water to escape but I don't see how that could possibly be the cause of your problem.

This spray that comes up on your boat..... will it spray up there when in neutral at a fast idle, or just when the boat is underway? If only when underway, is there a certain speed/rpm when this spray appears?

Have you attached any accessory to the transom which would extend into the water?

Re: Waterflow

Only sprays onto the boat when running out.

Here is some info I gathered today. 95 Johnson Fast Strike 115 20 inch shaft. Model# J115GLEOC. I have her hanging on a 79 Allison Craft 17'6" on I think a 6 inch Jack Plate. I know, old boat but I lover her and less than 1000 bucks in this set up.

I am pretty sure you are thinking of exactly where I am talking about. Under the bottom motor mount behind the covers but there is a small water port on the front of the motor here as well.

I took her out again and did not trim up when running. No water on the boat but I can still see water spraying up and hitting the bottom of the power head casing. I have never seen this before. Is it possible there is a bad gasket or seal here that would cause it to eject more water from these ports than normal?

Nothing new on the transom extending into the water.

Re: Waterflow

I believe that what you are encountering is a problem caused by having the engine too low on the transom which will absolutely kick up the rooster tail I mentioned previously.

THe only other occasion I've ever encountered anything like that is when a fellow installed a bait recycling something or other pickup on the transom that hung down in the water. That experiment of his caused water to spray up under the hood pan into the air intake which then got drawn into his carburetors. He blew two powerheads because of that.
