There should be a plastic tube on each copper tube. Those are used to locate them as the lower unit goes up. One is slightly shorter than the other so you can locate them one at a time. When you slid the lower unit off the plastic tubes probably stayed on the copper tubes, look up inside the midsection.
Don't know about now but back in the day when those motors were popular the short tube was more money than the long one. We never stocked the short one, just the long one and cut it as needed.
