History:
1 yr or more back I asked for help with treating water, so I could get my horticulture business away from town-water. We had a 9 yr drought and costs of buying water were running away on me.
Tommays, Rollmops and others were a great help.

Update:
From all the suggestions and help I got from you blokes, I nutted out a system, (took a long time), and now I can take the rotten water from my dam, and treat it, steralise it, and use it on my crop.

Tom, that scientist friend of yours, Jon Shaffer, was a brilliant help. I can now run e-coli tests plus read the results, and that was all due to him. I have actually stopped doing the tests as the pattern I follow always works.
I bought a stack of test kits and keep them in the freezer.

I did away with the DE filter. The turbidity (large amount of dissolved clay in the water) could block it completely with just 2-3k litres going thru it. Bit of a waste of $$'s, but that's OK, I have learnt.

Solution:
I pump 28k of rotten dam water into a tank.
Goes thru a fine screen filter on the foot valve to keep out solids.
I then superchlorinate with 10L of liquid chlorine, plus 3 chlorine tabs in a floater. Leave it for 2 weeks.
Then move it thru a sand filter (with a in-line chlorinator with 4 tabs in it) and in to another tank.
Superchlorinate again.
Then I draw it off at normally 3k lots, thru the sand filter again, into my 8k Litre working tank.
Everytime I irrigate my system (all water is returned to this tank) the water going out goes thru the sand filter.

The water is clean, the plants are healthy, and now town water rates have gone up, I reckon I save about $4-5k per year, and rising every year.
Having plenty of reasonable water saves me hours of trying to save every drop etc......if I loose a few thousand litres a week, so what.

So thank you to all those that helped.
Everything worked out sucessfully.
Tom, could you ask Jon if he got a thank you from me. I am sure I sent one, but can't find a record of it.

Cheers
Phillip
