I have a late 90s Mercury Black Max 150 horse outboard motor never been in saltwater just freshwater put it on water heaters and water coming out of the pee hole is about as warm as good bath water temperature put your hand on top of the heads where the thermostats are at and you can lay your hand there all day it's warm but not hot run it in the lake and the water coming out of the pee hole is so hot you can't touch it tested the water temp there water coming out was 140ish degrees heads you could still lay your hand on top of the heads and it was warm but not too hot to touch water temperature at the lake was 83 that day boat runs great no misses or hiccups but water coming out of the pool is super hot should be that hot coming out of the pee hole

Welcome to Iboats.

What's the condition of the thermostat, is it clean, rusty ?

Haven't taken them out should I take them out and check
If the motor is run in salt water will be good to check specially if being a late 90 oldie motor, probably the stats have never been changed ? Are cheap and motor will cool much better provided that all water passages doesn't have exccesive salt layers, crusts that lessens the cooling capacities of the entire cooling system.

Fresh water have their own contaminants, mineral deposits, microscopic organisms, etc which will adhere to the entire water passages due to being porous along rust formations as well...

Ok thanks I will change the thermostats but am I correct and saying the water temperature shouldn't be that hot coming out

Ok then it's going to be a 2.0 motor because it has carburetors
yeah, tha only carbureted 2.5 150 is tha XR6...

on the starboard head right below tha top spark plug (no. one cyl) there is a sensor. should be a tan/blue wire (probably ina plastic sleeve) coming from it going to a terminial with a coupla other tan/blues.. take a short (or long) jumper with key on, ground (any place on tha motor where you can) tha screw holdin' them together and you should get a buzzer... if its working then i wouldn't think about tha motor gettin' to hot.... 140/150 is pretty hot to tha touch with anything.. tha coolin' system will act a lot different when ona hose and/or ina bucket than when its under a load in tha lake pushin' a boat.

Thermostats open at 143*. That is hot but not scalding. A lot of those motors discharge all the telltale water thru the thermostats, so you will not have a telltale until the motor is warm.

Also, a good telltale stream is not an indicator of how well the motor is pumping cooling water. A water pressure gauge is the way to go.

I would also recommend you identify and test the overheat alarm.

Ok thanks have a water pressure gauge it shows about 22 lb of pressure pumping

Pressure is good.....If telltale water is about 143*F, you should be good to go.

Did you test overheat alarm? Simply ground it at the motor, key on and see if she buzzes.
