Water temp guage

I have a 1983 Johnson Model J90TLCTE. I want to put a temp guage on but I don't know where to put the sending unit. Also, what type of sending unit do I need? Will a automotive unit work? Thanks for any help.

These older crossflows don't have a specially machined hole for a temp sender. Most make a "Z" backet and mount the bracket to one of the head cover bolts. The bracket holds the sender tip flat to the head cover. Wire it and go. You will want a marine sender which will work with a marine gauge.
