Re: Water Temp. Gauge

Thanks. That makes me feel a lot better. Still annoyed at the previous owner, but certainly a bit relieved!

Re: Water Temp. Gauge

You should have a t-stat in there, maybe the previous owner had a problem with it being stuck open/close? and just removed it instead of replacing it. I still have a hard time believing that even without one the temp never went above 100 deg. If the t-stat doesn't fix your problem then get a meter like Merc200 says and meter between engine block ground and the sender, if it's open (infinite resistance) bad sender, at room temp 75 deg you should see approx 400-700 ohms, as it warms up the resistance drops and the guage increases, you saw this when you shorted the wire out, so if you ran the engine for a while the resistance should drop to around 100 ohms.

I'll give that a try if the t-stat doesn't seem to fix things. Thanks.

I'll certainly let the forum know what happens, but I will say that the water pump is working properly. All hoses are in great shape and the water circulation is good. I also replaced the impeller this weekend and the old one looked good and probably didn't really need replacing (could have used it for at least one more season). I am very interested to see what the cause is given all the suggestions that have been posted. Sounds like it could be any number of things.

Well, its official. It was the thermostat. I replaced it and took it out this weekend and I am getting a normal water temp. reading on my gauge. I've also noticed the engine runs alot better once it gets warmed up. It sounds smoother and seems just a bit faster.

Thanks!

Glad you got it working, I still would have thought it would eventually warm up more with a stuck open or missing t-stat so I learned something too. But that's what these forums are all about. Now if we could do something about the weather here in Ontario, has to have been one of the worse long weekends ever, non stop rain, wind, thunder and the water temp at my boat is only 56 deg.....brrrr!

Yikes! Thats cold for summertime. Not to brag but it was about 88-90 deg and sunny down here in TN this weekend. Head south and enjoy the warmth!

Re: Water Temp. Gauge

Doesn't suprise me Boatin Bob, with no T-stat, the engine is continuously taking in raw sea water, water probably about 60-70 degrees or so this time of year. Even when pulled through the engine it won't heat up all that much unless it's held there by the tstat or recycled through an exchanger. Even with an open t-stat, there is some restriction. With no t-stat the water flows ocmpletely quickly and freely out of the engine giving it even less time to heat up.

Why was the thermostat out?
I'm not sure if your boat requires winterizing. If so many owners including myself take the thermostat out when flushing antifreeze through the engine for winterizing. This way there is no doubt that the antifreeze is circulating through the entire engine. Maybe that is why it was out. It's good to change them every year or so, as they do corrode espacially if you have an open system.
Good luck

Re: Water Temp. Gauge

I'm not sure why the thermostat was out. The previous owner or mechanic removed it. I had read that about removing the thermostat for flushing antifreeze through the system, but I just drained my entire system for winterizing as I was storing it indoors over the winter where the temp. never gets below 60 degrees. I would have thought that the dealership that sold me the boat would have thought to do an inspection for things like that when they bought it though.
