It is not necessary but in my opinion it is a good idea to have one, there are many ways to get water in a boat gas tank and it only takes a little slug of water to screw up your day. They are simple to install, just follow the instructions in the box.

20 years ago I was out 20 miles off of Port Canaveral and my engine quit, cost me a several hour tow. Someone had turned the air vent for the tank so the hole was facing forward, the seas were choppy that morning and water from the chop was splashing into the air vent. A fuel & water separator would have probably saved me a tow.

Put a water separator in my fuel line to my outboard about a year ago, and haven't had any of the "bad gas" / dirty carb problems I used to frequently have.

I have an aftermarket fuel water separator on my boat.It has a glass bowl on the bottom with a filter above that. This allows you to visually check whatever is coming out of your fuel tank.It also has a drain screw on the bottom that you can undo, pump your fuel bulb and flush out until you see clean fuel coming thru. The brand I have is a RACOR,I also moved it from way inside the transom to where I can easily see it.The replacable element is a Ryco 2132p.

That older engine only came with a small round screen filter at the pump. When you go looking for a water separator kit, make sure it has the capacity for your your hp rating. I've seen Yamaha GWS filters recommended 115 hp and under.
