Sorry this may be a dumb question but better safe than sorry i guess. Does water get pulled from any place other than the water pump to cool the coolant in the heat exchanger on my merc 170/470? I know it uses the two exhaust ports on the stern drive mount in addition to the prop for water/exhaust discharge but i was just curious if this is the only place it gets freshwater from. I need to work on her a little out of the water and just want to be sure not to cause any damage just running her on the ears. I'm pretty familur with my merc 150 o/b but this i/o is a little bit of a different creature. Thanks.

-Jersey

No, it should only have one intake. This will probably be a 3/4 flanged thru-hull
fitting.
But some I/Os intake is on the outdrive, just like an outboard. Either way, there is only one.

------------------
Time to change my tagline

BTW, it's not a dumb question....DUMB is not asking someone, and getting stranded out there. And I have had to ask some seamingly idiotic questions

Jersey, use the same flushing ears in the same place as you did on your 150.

Re: water routing on an I/O?

Thanks 12footer and ODDD1, again. I rebuilt the carb, did a water pump change in addition to a bunch of other things and went over the whole boat and figured out exactly how the i/o system worked and differed from an o/b. Started her up today after a complete overhaul and she purred like new. It seems these things run cool. I guess the setup of fresh water running around the coolant pipes in the heat exchanger works well. Thanks again guys for the responses.

-Jersey
