I have a 1991 40hp Evinrude and I'm about repair my first water pump. I purchased a kit from the local dealer and I'm eager to get started. Keeping in mind that I have a good mechanical background and a repair manual, how involved will it get and about how long should it take me.

Re: water pump

Ahoy, C2C! The first time you do this it is fairly easy. After that it is routine. The two most common mistakes are: not folding the arms of the impeller in the correct rotational direction and not getting the water pipe aligned properly when reinstallibg the lower end. (The reason I call them most common is that those are the mistakes I have made over the years). If you passed junior high industrial arts you will have no problem.

Good luck.
JB

It will probably take you two hours the first time. I just chimed-in on this one
to let you know, this is an ideal time to check your lower unit for leaks and wear too.
