I recently purchased a 1975 Mercury 50hp outboard. Seller states that he installed a new water pump this season. Shouldn't I be seeing a steady stream of water coming from either side of the motor as an exit for the water pump? I can't even find a portal on the engine on either side.

Re: Water pump

I would look for a small hole on the starboard side of the engine. I believe it is on the lower surface of the lower cowling. You can probably find it by tracing the path of the small rubber tube that leads from the engine to this part of the lower cowling.

Its is not a big job to replace the impeller if you want to save the engine. The impeller will cost ~$25 and is much cheaper than replacing a fried power head.

Lots of luck

Re: Water pump

Those square holes high on the midsection are for exhaust relief. They often do not discharge water when running on the flusher.

Water should exit thru the prop and the grates above the antiventilation plate.
