I have a 87 Merc outboard-115 hp. I changed the water pump impeller yesterday. The question I have is, what is the purpose of the rubber grommet or bushing on the drive shaft directly above the pump housing?
I believe you are refering to the rubber centrifugal slinger. I don't know its exact purpose unless its to keep too much presser from building up on the seal under it.
