water pump replacement on 1973 115 evinrude

I have a 1973 carravelle with a 115hp 1973 evinrude, can anyone tell me how to replace the water pump impeller? i took the 4-5 bolts outa the lower unit but i still cant get the lower unit off.

There are seven bolts that need to be removed, including the one in the trim tab so that you can get to the one that is hidden above it.

Be sure that you first scribe a line on the face of the trim tab so that you can put it back as it was.

You must also disconnect the shift rod at the bellcrank under the carburetors. Click the thumbnail below:

Once you drop the gearcase, the following thread may help. The gearcases and pumps are similar except that yours has two water tubes.

The '73 is an electric shift, right? If so, there's some tricks of the trade you need to apply while taking the LU off. I've only read about them (haven't done them), but one includes tying a string to the shift wires as you pull the LU off so you can run them back through later.

I'm sure someone will chime in with all the goodies momentarily.

73-77 85's 115's and 135's have hydraulically assisted mechanical shift.

There are important differences in the powerheads between 73 and 74.

I generally consider that whole '72-'78 period the "re-engineer era" for just about everything OMC. You gotta check and double-check all the cross-year interchangeability or hilarity may ensue.
