hi everyone,
my older brother just gave me a antique evinrude he said he knows nothing about it but the guy he bought it from said it is a 1949 evenrude.after i looked up the serial# it ends up to be a 1957 evenrude 7.5 hp.i also got the steel tank with the fuel pump on the can. as funny as it may be i filled the can with fresh fuel mix and it started right up and runs awesome. i didnt see any water comming out of the exhaust on the back so i shut it down after it warmed up. is the water supposed to come out of the exhaust? where is the location of the therm.how do i tell if the water pump is broke or the therm is stuck or no good? any help would be awesome because it runs nice and i don't want to burn it up.....

welcome to iboats. if my recollection is correct, it does not have a tstat. you have to submerge the leg 1/2 way up, as pump is not self priming. should get water mist, droplets, out the hole 1/2 way up the back of the leg. i would change the impeller just for insurance.

Yep, should be a healthy spray of water being blown out the relief hole.

Before you ask, yes you have to remove the powerhead before you can remove the lower unit to get to the water pump. Pay attention to the carbon seal on top end of drive shaft and put a new 303355 gasket and 303347 o-ring on the seal. This is important!!!!
