Water pump on 1963 40 hp Johnson

I'm fixin' to try replace the water pump impeller on the subject motor but am not sure what to look for. When I drop the lower unit, what will I see? <br />Does the drive shaft and the gear shifter rod drop out along with the lower unit or do I have to disconnect them at some point? My manuals don't go back that far but I am surprised your's doesn't give you step by step directions and pictures. That is a very common repair.

MG--<br />I don't have a manuel for this motor nor the thirty bucks to spring for one. Was hoping to draw on the experience of someone who owns a manuel. Our local library doesn't have one either. Any help will be greatly appreciated.<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />Meaux
