Water pump maybe?

Any help would be a great help. I got a boat with a 55 hp Chrysler from my grandfather. It hadn't been cranked in 3 years. I cranked it today and had it sitting in a barrel of water. I never saw any water squirting out the back of it. It smoked like crazy, but cranked easily each time. I didn't run it but a maybe 30 seconds and was afraid it would run hot. Any ideas and/or advice?????

Ahoy, Zig. You almost certainly need to replace the water pump impeller. I'm going to guess that your best bet for parts would be a Merc (Force) dealer.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Hello JB,
Just a quick question, why would you send him to a merc dealer? Does Mercury have some kind of affiliation with Force/Chrysler?

Good luck with the impeller Ziggy!

Hi, Mnmfors. Yes. Merc bought Force and built the last few models before discontinuing production.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Mercury dealers have good access to Chrysler outboard parts. Many are no longer available but I have had good luck getting parts back into the early 70's. If your outboard has been sitting for several years and you are going to put it back into service you should change the impeller as a preventive measure any way.

Thanks guys. I'll try to find the impeller somewhere and then I will hae to figure out how to do this. No experience with lower units AT ALL.

Hi,Ziggy.
I agree with all of the above. Your motor has a thermostat above the head, towards the port side. Remove the 2screws,and try it without the thermostat. Go back with a new thermostat. They are only 9bukz or so. It is ok to test without the thermostat, but no longer than 20minutes.
BTW, it takes about 1 minute for the tstat to open.

Thanks. Good idea. The tsat I'm not worried about. It's breaking down the foot and replacing th impeller that I'm afraid of. I'm sure there has to be a shaft or linkage or something to loosen etc. I don't know what to expect or even where to begin. The manual will help I'm sure, but finding one locally and SOON is my delima.

Thanks again.
