Water pump impeller

This web site suggests that the water pump impeller be changed every 2 years or so. As far as I know, it has never been changed. It is a 1996 Johnson 112 Spl with 250 hours on it.

I am very mechanically inclined and my question is: can I do it myself? I have a good set of mechanics tools. Is there a special tool required? Also, please forgive me for asking what may seem like a dumb question, but where is it located?

Thanks

Re: Water pump impeller

the hardest part of the job is disconnecting and reconnecting the shift rod under the carbs. the rest is straight forward. it is located on the top of the lower unit, you have to drop the lower unit. if you've never done it before you need an original service manual for your motor. outboardbooks.com, or some of the ebay stores.

There are no special tools required and the impeller is located in the lower unit of the outboard. You should really purchase the service manual for your engine for a step by step procedure along with the appropriate turque specifications. You can buy the service manual at "http://www.outboardbooks.com/". Just remove the " at the front and back of the web site.

Don't just change the impellor, replace the entire pump assembly.
