Water pump impeller replacement question

Ok so this winter I am planning on replacing the water pump impeller on my gen 2 alpha one drive (4.3LX 1995). I have a couple of questions regarding this job, i have heard different things.
1.) Does the upper drive need to come off too or can I just leave that attached and remove the lower?
2.) Is there a gasket that goes between the upper and lower drives? I can't seem to find anywhere where that gasket would be, but I would think there would have to be one.
3.) Anything else I need to be aware of while I'm in there?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Water pump impeller replacement question

1. you can remove the lower only. however it's a painful 2 man job to put it back where ya found it.
2. no gasket, but there is a quad ring that seals the gear lub passage between the upper and the lower. this seal must be in place.
3. go check out #14 from this link. look at section 3B on how to do the job your getting ready to attempt.

Thanks, but that link only gave me the front cover lol, is there a full book PDF somewhere?

open the bookmarks if it's not visible. 2nd icon down on the left side of the screen. choose 14. scroll down a little to where it says sterndrive units alpha 1 generation II. when ya hover over them words your curser should turn to a hand. left click once to open.
