I am taking the marine plywood to the upholstery lady this Wednesday and I am wondering if I need to seal the marine plywood that will be covered by the marine vinyl? I want to do it right but I an also limited by time and money. Would a regular household poly work in this situation?

Thanks

I think the best thing is thinned out epoxy.

Spar urethane will work (exterior grade).

You really need to ask your upholster this question ..

She may not be able to 45 deg. tack staples if your MG is epoxy coated or poly with glass coatings.

I think if you put some penetrating epoxy on your MG your good. ( better than nothing IMHO )

I will be doing this myself in the near future. I was thinking about using the same epoxy I used on my transom. It was expensive but I believe it will be worth every penny in the long run. http://www.systemthree.com/store/pc/General-Purpose-Epoxy-Resin-Quart-11p2.htm They also have a sealer that I just found when looking for the epoxy link, but I am not sure how well this will work. http://www.systemthree.com/store/pc/S-1-Sealer-c32.htm
Hope that helps.

to the op......please read this again......it is correct.......if you glass it with poly.....you cant staple it...
epoxy is just as tough.......thats why all boats are not coated with anything.

you might just do a quick paint job on it if you are worried.....

btw........ marine grade is a really expencive wood for that duty

Well I'm no Pro but I epoxied the ext. grade plywood on my seats and I had no problem stapling my upholstery. I used a cheapo HF air stapler set @ 30lbs air pressure and never missed a beat and never bent a single staple even going thru 4 layers of vinyl at times. Maybe I was just lucky. I do realize that where the staples penetrated that will allow the possibility of water penetration but overall coating the wood had more benefit than not doing it. I would be interested in learning why coating the wood is not recommended by upholsterers for stapling.

usually,,,,,with poly and glass,,,,the barrier is really hard for a staple to go thru.....epoxy alone is different....i dont use the stuff si i dont know how hard it is to go thru with a few coats......

and woodie.......i agree.....so what if the staples penetrate the wood...(i have heard that arguement lots). it will last far longer the way you did it bud.

I upholstered my cockpit side panels after coating them (1/2" marine ply) with one light coat of epoxy. I just used an Arrow hand stapler and SS T-50 staples through foam and vinyl. Then I lightly tapped the few that weren't flush with an auto body palm hammer I bought for $8 at Harbor Freight. No problem. In fact, I had to do an edge again and the staples were very secure.

Actually.. I can staple into Marine grade PL with a layer of mat with my Bostitch ;) . Its just takes more time to 45 deg tack to set it. ( I am NO PRO on upholstery in any means ). Marine grade IS the best for bulsters and seats unless your going to resin coat the Crap out of them ( epoxy or poly ).

Ditto Woody :) . Remember though that the pros normally "tack" there stuff before full face staples go in. They have to pull them out ... that is why I recommended he Talked to Her about it first. It might be better For Her to "dry fit" before slapping coatings on the wood ( making Her job easier without any coatings ).

You kinda have to staple into the wood when doing this .. I dont understand the argument aside from the Top of the line pros that use MG ply instead of CDX or some crap that the staples ( after the bolster or seat was cut ) dont stick because there into Voids in the wood.. then leach out and start to delam the vinyl ..

Good choice IMO .. MGP is the best option for Any Upholster job .. You never know when you use "other materials".

The Other materials can and will work and Im not saying It will not.. its a boat to boat thing again ( and we still do not know the make/model/year of the OP's Boat. We Dont know Interior or exterior .. application .. or nothing.

I say lets keep this civil and not really understanding of the Project at hand from the OP ..I/We are only suspecting at this point.

JDW .. please give us more info and pics please :) ..

Re: water proofing marine plywood that will be covered with marine vinyl??

I used system 3 clear coat on mine

http://www.systemthree.com/store/pc/Clear-Coat-c14.htm

Granted there are the staple holes that will eventually lead to the demise of the plywood, but I figured the clear would help me get a little more life out of the seats. The product actually works great for a "waterproof-er", I have used it on some fresh cut flower vases I have turned. I did consult my upholster, he didn't have any issues with it. He did however mention not to put glass and mat on it. The epoxy by the way is water thin and soaks in well. I used a marine grade fir, which really soaked it up. I put on a coat, lightly sanded, then put on a top coat to seal up any open end grain.

I just did my upholstery, new wood n the whole nine.. I used a thin layer of fiberglass gel on the captains chairs, minus the actual fiberglass, n MESSMERS stain n sealer on all the rest of the wood. Been building for many a year n messmers will be just fine. Hold up a long time is UV, mildew, n water resistant. Home depot.

Re: water proofing marine plywood that will be covered with marine vinyl??

JD, I asked this very question when I bought marine plywood to repair the console on my Lund. I was told to use marine glue (powder) to add extra protection to the plywood, as its the glue that makes it waterproof/resistant. I was instructed to mix this in a thinner ratio than would be used for actual glueing, and then just paint on and let dry. I did two coats on all of my pieces. I had no problems when I stapled the vinyl back on
