Pressure in the tell tale hose should be the same as the pressure in the block.

The OP didn't T into the tell tale, but I know what you're saying.

Re: Water pressure gauge installation on Johnson V4 120hp -89

I've got the same issue in installing an existing gauge on my boat when I swapped motors. I now have a 1990 90 HP and the only place I could find to install the hose was either Teeing the tell tale line or making a direct connection and removing the tell tale line altogether. Since it is on a pontoon and you can't see the stream I wanted to simply remove the tell tale and make the direct connection. Common sense tell you that you won't get anything like an accurate reading if you Tee the line and run fifteen feet of 1/8 inch feed line to the gauge having an open stream less than a foot away on a 1/4 inch line. I want to make sure I understand the solution presented in the above posts. I've been struggling with if the direct connection would create any other issues in cooling the motor by removing the tell tale line but if I understand the posts correctly the tell tale may be removed and the nipple be used for the direct connection to the gauge?

Please forgive me for trying to "steal the thread" but I simply want to clarify what I think to be the solution presented.

Remove the tell tale line and make the direct connection to the gauge? By doing this there will be no change in the cooling process of the motor?

Seeing you can't see the stream anyway, hook your gauge directly to it. It won't hurt anything.

I have just put an extention pipe on the tell tale for testing purposes and will be getting a guage to fit this on.
see water pressure from the driving position without needing a neck like a giraffe is so much better, and on a chilly day is
nice to have warm water freely available to rinse the cold hands with.
But I will be installing a pressure guage as I am an avid guage watcher in boats and cars, that's what they are put there for.
( to keep you informed of whats going on).
I am not exactly sure of what is the correct water pressure for wide open throttle, but would expect around 20 plus psi.
