hi all. this is the first time i've posted a ? on this forum so here ti goes. I just completed a complete boat building project and got the motor on and running when one of the members of my bass club said i should install a water presure gage but i can't find anything in my manuel on how or were to hook it up.i have a 1982 150hp johnson motor.anyone know how?

Re: water pressure gage

just Tee it off to the gauge from where your tell tale exits at the exhaust plate, and if you want to wire it it just a light that can be wired from another gauge light.

A lot of motors have unused, threaded plugs into the water jacket, on the cylinder head. That is a good place to install the nipple for the pressure gauge.

You can run the gauge direct to the hose barb where the telltale hose was. You can also tee the hose as fishfeatures mentioned. I'm not so sure the gauge pressure will read the same in both instances. Possible the gauge pressure will read slightly lower if you "t" the line.

thanks for the info. as soon as it thalls out here i'll see if there is any ports or if i need to put it in the line.

I recently swapped motors and the new (1990) motor does not have a plug to remove for the installation of the barb. I considered Tee-ing the line as described above. I also considered removing the telltale hose and connecting the guage line direct. Boat already has guage in dash so my install task might be as easy as connecting a water line.

My question is? Does the telltale stream affect the engine cooling in any manner? Connecting it to the gauge would totally remove the discharge of water as it would be directed to the gauge. On the positive side, I should get a more accurate reading rather than one using a Tee. If the down side is engine damage then I failed to accomplish my goal. The motor is mounted on a pontoon and it is impossible to view the telltale without leaving the driver's seat. I realized I highjacked an old thread an apoligize in advance but was hoping to get an update on what was done and if it worked.

Has anyone ever Tee-d the line going to the telltale and with what success? Common sense indicates an installation into the water jacket will give full force reading whereas a Tee connection at best will be reduced. What I am concerned with is being able to monitor the water pressure while running.

Yes, the telltale does siphon off some cooling water-a minuscule amount. It actually has a restrictor nozzle at the cowling to further reduce the lost water. If you eliminate the telltale by hooking the pressure guage direct, that is not a problem. I run my pressure gauge direct to the telltale.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I will see what fittings are available locally for the Tee as once I determine everything is working and the pressure reads say 5 psi, I really don't care if it is accurate as long as I have a benchmark to let me know it is working. The easiest connection will be to simply bypass the telltale and hook directly to the gauge but like I mentioned earlier, I didn't want to create a problem by doing this. Thanks again. My thinking was the bypass method should work as there are several motors that didn't have a telltale.

Re: water pressure gage

remember that tell tale was moved to the highest point possible on the 3 cylinder to allow air bubbles to exit the water jacket. that tells me there is a reason for it other than indicating water flow. I put a tee in mine i show something like 5-8lbs idling and close to 20 wide open

Re: water pressure gage

I recently asked a similar question. I was working on my motor and found a hose that was not connected. It's for my water pressure gauge. The end of the hose shows it was connected to something, somewhere, at sometime, but I have no idea where. I'm going to try two things; One is to just plug it into the tell-tale and see what happens, Two is to T it. I will try the T on the outside first to see how it works, before I cut into any lines. It would be very cool if I could find a dedicated place on the water jacket, but that's going to take more research.
