Water Passage Cavity

Can anyone explain to me the how the water passage section of the motor works. I am talking about the section at the top of the block where the lift bracket is attached. I can see that there a tiny hole at the top of each bank on the block. I am assuming that they go into the water passage section. Does it go anywhere from there? The water flow diagram for the Johnson 88 HP SPL doesn't show this section as part of the normal water flow. I am confused and trying to get a total understanding of my motor. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Re: Water Passage Cavity

If you tell me what year, I can look at the BRP parts listings and see if I can decipher the routing.

Re: Water Passage Cavity

I'm guessing with a 1989 parts view.
Looks like the water comes up through the water pipe into the engine block and through the heads to the thermostat and then out the pee-pee hole at the bottom of the block, starboard.
There's the water passage cavity at the top of the block and there is another hose from the port head, presumably to the starboard head located at the bottom of the block.
What is listed as a temperature switch must be a high-tech thermostat, no?
Does this help?

Model J88MSLCUS?

Looks like water makes it from the pump through the block, port to starboard and fills a water jacket in the exhaust cover and out the pee-pee hole.
Same as above, a water passage cavity on top and hose between the two heads on the bottom.

Re: Water Passage Cavity

I believe the problem has been solved. The head gasket on the port side is screwed up at the top of the gasket where the tiny hole is. Looks like previous owner used some type of gasket compound on the the head gasket. This is a no no as far as I know. Service manual says not to use any sealer on the head gasket. I've only owned the boat for 2 months. I want to thank everyone who responded. Its great that there are people that are willing to share their knowledge.
As soon as I get the new gaskets and get them installed I will see if it is fixed. Unfortunately I am having surgery on 2 of my fingers which will put me out of commission for 2 weeks.
