Hello, Back again :( , Ok, we're the ones with the 1977 Johnson 85HP money pit. We replaced both heads/gaskets/plugs/rectifier/water pump/impeller/fuel pump/ignition coils/fuel line and primer bulb/correct water hoses and she came with a almost new starter and carb. We posted a few days ago about an intermittent start problem and we think we have that solved after cleaning the power pack terminals. She fires every time. Now.... We went out and fired her up tonight and water is coming from only one tell-tale AND is "flushing" out between the exhaust housing on one side. My guess is the tubes somehow came loose bewteen the water pump and copper tubing. This didn't happen before. Hubby thinks we have to pull the power head. Please help !! Thank You All for your past suggestions!

Hey ka3wld,
If memory serves, there's only one tell-tale hole on that 85. Not sure what you mean by "flushing out between exhaust housing". Is it leaking from between the power head & exhaust cover plate? I'm kinda shooting from the hip here
Backlash

Hi BackLash. Below are two pics(hopefully). One showing there are two tell-tales and the other shows screw driver pointing to where the water flushes out just above the gearcase and red line.

Sorry, the pics are not working. I think maybe because HTML is turned off. Anyway, the water is flushing just above the gearcase where the motor swivels? I'm not sure what to call this. Thanks for trying to help BackLash :)

We pulled the gearcase down to find the left plastic water tube was up inside the left copper tube .This has happened before and we're considering glue!! Now another problem, gear oil was everywhere! Water pump was covered with gear oil as was everything else. Hubby's only thought is it's coming from around the shift rod...maybe the shift rod's cover gasket is bad? Any thoughts? Thank you!

It could be the shift shaft seal, or it could be iether driveshaft seal (under, or on top of the pump housing).
The way to tell for sure, is with a bicyle pump and a fitting threaded the same as the fill/vent screw hole. Screw it in, pump it to between 5 and 10PSI, and submerge the unit in a garbage can full of water. The bubbles will tell all.
Seal kits are cheap, and it could not have failed at a better time (allays gotta look at the bright side).
Is the pump housing on your engine equipped with one of those teflon cones to seat on the leg's tube? If so, replace it, and the new one should seat properly.
You guys sure have paid your dues to get on the water. I hope light is at the end of the tunnel!
